For all of Woodrow Wilson's high-minded talk, he was just a typical weasel careerist worried about his future lifestyle, during the presidency and after, if he alienated big business.
It's also quite eerie comparing WW's talk about upholding democracy abroad with George W. Bush's - there really is nothing new under the sun, as Western man falls for the same fraud again and again. |

Old world wealth was entirely transferred from London to NYC (this was the switch from London becoming global financial center to NYC becoming the center).
There was a quote in a WW1 book about this referring to an old banking quote that was something like: If you owe the bank a small amount they have the power over you, if you owe the bank a lot of money you have the power. Or maybe Getty's quote: "If you owe the bank $100 that's your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that's the bank's problem."
I.e. the amounts of wealth transferred, now in debt, became so absurdly large that the U.S. now had a significant financial interest in Britain winning the war, and right after the timing of this was when the U.S. entered.
Of course you could argue it's just a correlation because of course the war getting to critical points needing additional help from allies would correlate to financial devastation / massive debt.
One of the more interesting / latest fads in history scholarship is to analyze these events / wars from pure economics. I'll check my reading list but there's been a bunch of interesting histories lately looking at the french revolution, ww1 etc. from an economic analysis point of view.

Date: January 19th, 2019 10:42 PM Author: Stimulating Lettuce Dan Carlin's HH series Blueprint For Armageddon - a 23 hours long 6-part series and every minute is incredible. If someone told me a few years ago (before I found HH) to listen to a 23 hour long podcast on WW1 I would've told them to go fuck themselves - but I wasn't bored for a minute, and especially because WW1 is so overlooked relative to its importance in shaping our entire modern world / geo-political landscape and various problems.
If this sounds too daunting (maybe it doesn't) - test the HH (hardcore history) waters with his 45ish minute episode on the HH addendum series called Nightmares of the Indianapolis or something like that - it reads like a nightmare horror movie putting you on deck the ship asleep in your bunk right before the Indianapolis gets hit by 2 jap torpedoes, sending the crew into the water within 18 minutes dealing with burning oil, shutting your friends off in compartments taking on water, then ultimately chumming the 80 degree south pacific water in july with hundreds of dead and mutilated / bleeding soldiers attracting sharks for what makes the most horrific human experience (on a mass scale) I think I've ever heard. Days stuck in the water with dessert heat, hunger / thirst and sharks that constantly feed on the pack of sailors (oh btw they prefer to feed at night....)
Blueprint is pretty powerful - hard to think of a single podcast series period that I would recommend to anyone more than that one, history or otherwise. |

If you read Churchill's WW2 history - the second world war I think it is, in it he talks about Britain's plans and preparations had they been forced to keep fighting into 1919, how dire of situation the country was in etc. - and they had already prepared and were ready to use like this "blue gas" or something - that contained tiny crystals that made you puke even through gas masks, effectively rendering gas masks worthless against this particular type of poison gas. There was only one gas mask type in the world that could protect against it and the germans didn't have it - and Churchill said Britain had every intention of using this gas had the war slogged into 1919, and they also intended to start air bombing German civilians / cities. |
