"Third, the public sector must transition younger employees into defined-contribution retirement plans, such as the 401(k)s common in the private sector. These plans allow employees to manage their own retirement funds, instead of depending on a government pension check that may never come."

BOOMERS get the best economy in the history of this country, easiest time to be alive and generate wealth, and even the fucking RETARDED ones who didn't take advantage still get pensions

and the young? lol fuck them, let the private "market" decide

Most boomers squandered 90% of the opportunities they had, made terrible investment decisions etc. and still ended up multi-millionaires

pretty sure i read that one of the union contracts had drill-press operators at Ford assembly plants in 1972 making $15.50/hour after a 6-month probationary period along with time-and-a-half after 8 hours or on special days like holidays. that's like 90 bucks in today's dollars per hour.

We've pretty much proven that pensions are politically unworkable. Politicians always underfund them and unions look the other way, both knowing that they'll be out of power by the time the bill comes due. This doesn't really work with a 401(k), because you have to give the employees the money now. The government pinky swearing to pay you later has to be heavily discounted against money you can have and invest now.

cr. Pensions are bad public policy for government employees for this very reason - they will ALWAYS be raided by short sighted pols.

Companies got rid of pensions decades ago because they actually are on the hook for them and shareholders would never allow the unfunded liabilities so many states face. I realise that's very (((GC))) to say, but still.

The problem is that the 401(k) is so unpredictable and one recession can wipe out an entire generation’s retirement savings.

There has a to be a better way to ensure retirements for older workers without the liability of pensions or the unpredictability of the market.

Smaller pensions as a base, plus 401(k) savings, plus social security, should be plenty stable for the vast majority of Americans.

I could get behind smaller pension plans, but you'd probably have to get rid of public sector unions along with it so that they don't continue to get used as a one-way ratchet during negotiations.

Or find some other way that the plans aren't raided or vastly underfunded. Good luck with that, since our politicians can't think beyond one election cycle.

Pensions should be run like the Fed by an unelected board of long term appointees who have no direct relationship to elected officials.
