There were gradual adjustments, like a few dollars more for my 401K. Obviously taxes go up, but it can't be that much, right? Something is eating 60% of my salary increase. I figured I'd take home closer to 4K more.

I think a lot of this relates to SOCIAL SECURITY taxes and while it looks a lot worse in my first couple of paychecks, eventually I make above the max amount and my check will rise even more in like September and beyond (I make 160K base, 20K more with bonus)

OK, basically figured it out.

1. Health costs went from 0 to $50 a month

2. Small increases everywhere, like federal taxes, added up

3. I will make up some of the $$ on the back end when I hit the Social Security cap which is like 8K of payments for the year

Individually these don't explain it, but taken together it explains why I am seeing so little in my take home pay

This is a big one. Your paycheck goes down every single year from December to January because of this.

It still goes up because my salary goes up. The issue is that it did not rise as much as I think it should.

But yes, I will earn a few thousand more around September or so which will explain some of this disparity.

If your salary is around 160-200k, the FED marginal tax rate is around 32%. Plus states like CA add around 10%. Just this tax alone is around 42% not including the other costs you mentioned.

Also, you control your own withholding, so you can have them withhold as little or as much as you want (but you'll be penalized if you underpay by like 10%).
