if Moose can hold his % through 75% of the ballot (and note that last year he was only -0.9% off for all public ballots (~75%) as opposed to the pre-announcement number), then he will need 57 votes out of the remaining 103, or 55.34%, to hit 75%

last year he had 46.7% on private ballots, so he'd need to do about 9% better. certainly possible.
the other thing i thought of -- with all the hoopla around Rivera poss being unanimous, i wonder if a few small hall guys abstain so as to avoid being the guy who prevented Rivera from being unanimous. that could help Moose. |

There were several tough decisions, all created by the problem with cutting down to 10, because there's more than 10 guys on the ballot who belong. Probably the most controversial thing I considered was dropping Mariano Rivera -- he's a slam-dunk Hall of Famer who didn't need my vote to get in, and I would rather have guaranteed that guys like Sosa, Sheffield and Andruw Jones were on the ballot in the years to come. Because of the rule of 10, any vote for someone hurts everyone you don't vote for, risking their elimination. But I also didn't want to deal with the inevitable "You didn't vote for Mo!" hysteria, since that's what people would have gotten hung up on, not the continuing problem of limiting voters' ballots to 10 names. |

however, i agree that guys like Baines cause a problem because people invariably start comparing candidates to Baines. literally this morning on MLB network someone was talking about Walker's candidacy and mentioned Baines as one of many comparisons. to me that is a huge problem. for purposes of the BBWAA vote, since Baines never got more that 6.1% of the vote, he should not even come up in discussions regarding players who are up for BBWAA election. those players should only be compared to players similarly elected.
where Baines WILL become a problem is in the Veterans committee. Think about how many players compare favorably to Baines and should now be locks to get in via the VC. Mattingly, Dale Murphy, McGriff, Pettitte -- i mean hell, outside of the hits counting stat, Bernie Williams was probably a much better player, and i don't think he belongs in the Hall by any stretch |
