I’m a first year and I’m probably screwed if I don’t change everything about the way I operate. I sit around in my office and probably do about 8 hours of work a week on a good week. My work product and timeliness is consistent with that work ethic.
Shrinks have diagnosed me with ADHD at various stages of my life ever since I was in second grade. Meds don’t work for me (I’ve been given Wellbutrin, adderall, Ritalin, vyvanse, and even modafinil). I did poorly in high school because I could never get all the reams of bullshit assignments done, but was fine in undergrad because I had a chip on my shoulder and chose easy classes where the grades were based on a handful of assignments. Didn’t do jack shit in law school because of the H/P system.
No matter how big or small the assignment, I don’t feel the pressure that compels me to start until the eleventh hour. It seems like I’m going to blow multiple deadlines pretty soon with the amount of work I’ve been assigned recently. The odd part is that I genuinely enjoy the nature of work in my practice area, but that’s not enough to get me to start anything.
Taking advice and/or abuse. Sorry for the TLSesque post, not a copy and paste but I thought about posting there. Thought I’d find more kindred spirits here.

How did you get registered on autoadmit
What do you spend your time doing instead of working

I didn't have time for CBT lol but that's what everyone says to ppl with adhd. And if you're not responding to meds well, it's partly behavioral.
I've been working on that shit in my own way on my own, though. To help keep motivated I break shit down into smaller tasks and reward myself. Not the healthiest, but it's effective. Cigarettes, alcohol, weed, etc...at the heart of it ADHD is a dopamine disorder, so you gotta feed the beast if you're going to get anything done.

You literally have to Principal Skinner it, break it up into little segments and try to break your record, and do what the dude says above and give yourself little rewards at various increments. You set a goal to work for 10 minutes straight and then you reward yourself with 10 minutes of fucking around time. Literally set timers. Then go for 15/15. Then try to do 20/10, 30/15, 40/20, 45/15. By the time you're able to do 50/10 and stick with that you're basically a normal person.
Also try to pick rewards that aren't hard to detach from. E.g. I can't use autoadmit, but looking at ESPN is great because I usually can't read it for more than 10 minutes before I see something that pisses me off anyway, so when the time goes off I have no problem xing out.

Just looked at my time tracker and felt a wave of anxiety because I haven’t billed my time for the past two weeks and have two weeks of nothingness in January where I sat around. On top of that I haven’t started something I said I would finish yesterday, which will take more than a day.
Should I talk to somebody at the firm about this? I think many of my law school classmates turn to friends from their summer class for a source of support. Without getting into too many details, I don’t have that and it’s not my fault that I don’t.
Don’t know what to do. I’d take time off without pay until I figured this out if I could, but I realize that’s unlikely to be an option.

Here are some tips:
1) Lists are your friend. You should have two—a “master task list” thats for stuff in the long term that requires concerted progress, and a daily task list—use your phone—where anthing you have in the relatively short term goes on there. When you think of something new, it goes on the list. When it’s completed, you remove it.
2) Figure out what your attention span is. Use stopwatches to see how long you can focus on a task before getting initially distracted, and how long you can go before acting on that distraction. This is important because part of the disability of ADHD is poor time management and ultimately poor time perception.
3) One thing that’s very useful, and can be done by a reasonably intelligent layperson (and I assume you are), is to dip your toe into the cognitive side of cognitive behavioral therapy. Our condition means that some of our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves and our capabilities are inaccurate—some of that due to the chemical disorder underlying the condition, and some of that as a response to the experiences you’ve had with this condition. You might undervalue yourself because of troubles adhd has caused at school or work, or you may overstate your capabilities to yourself.

Started Vyvanse a week ago. First stimulant ever. Seems to work well enough, but it really helps to have some kind of podcast or something one to get me to concentrate, which is not the case when I'm not taking anything.

I tried to get some kind of medication about ten years ago when I was flaming out of grad school and couldn't figure out why. School I was at had a clinic where you go in for about six hours and get a full workup for ADD/ADHD--meet with a therapist, psychometric testing, etc.
They told me I didn't have it. In particular they talked about my performance on an test that was basically "Simon Says" on a computer screen--if a certain symbol flashed on the screen, you would click a button, but if a different symbol flashed, you wouldn't click. I don't know how well I did on it, but apparently people who they think have real ADD/ADHD fall asleep during the test. So ok.
Made my way into the lucrative field of comma checking, which is obviously a poor fit for someone with attention issues, which in turn kicks off comorbid conditions. Wife has been on my case about seeing psychologist/psychiatrist because of these conditions. Generally, my response was that I had seen both in the past and not found them helpful. My last therapist kicked me out after two and a half sessions.
A few weeks ago, though, had a really bad night--heart pounding, up until 4AM, etc. So I found some rando psychiatrist on ZocDoc who took my insurance. Go in there, talk about issues, including getting denied a dx before, and somehow walk out of there with a script for both Vyvanse and Xanax. This lady might be a pill mill. I don't know.
Initial experience is that Vyvanse calms me the fuck down at work. Not really superfocused so much as that, typically, if I have four things to do, if I start on one of them, I will have constant anxiety about not doing the other three. That shit is way down now.

Law is shit, pure shit. You need to acknowledge that and accept that fact first. You may have ADHD, and that will make it worse, but law is shit.
The only people who succeed long term in law and don't end up with clinical depression are autists who enjoy spending countless hours paying attention to small details and minutiae. You can try various techniques to help you concentrate on this horrid shit, but to what end? In four years you'll be unable to look at a tall building without dreaming about the wooosh-splat as you jump.
If this is not you, just get out. Coast for a year to collect the paycheck and pay down some debt. Then get the fuck out.

Non "h" addmo mid/senior biglaw here.
In some ways Biglaw is good bc of the constant pressure. If I'm slow on work I will do nothing before I touch the non-time sensitive shit festing for years on my to-do list.
If you have the option, try to switch to a practice area or work with partners that have lots of short term fire drills.
Don't take breaks. I regularly take my gakk and work from 10am to 11pm with no eating except some candy bars or fruit my firm puts out. Even going to the cafeteria in the building breaks the rhythm too much. If I get real lunch I end up telling myself I can just read some news while I eat then I spend the next 2 hours reading Wikipedia or whatever.
Don't go on social media. Don't even download the apps on your phone. This is a good tip for non-addmos too. Facebook news feed and Igram are designed like a slot machine to exploit your brain's dopamine/reward system.
Use timers and bill all your time. Block bill until someone tells you not to.
Don't try to work casually on nights or weekends from home. Stay at the office and grind and then take the whole weekend off to recover. Addmos can get in a groove and be super focused for long periods of time. They can't multitask or jump from work to leisure and back.
Don't start the day with news or personal shit. Try to bill every minute you are in the office until at least noon. Hopefully by then you get in the groove and just keep going.

My partner is a defense attorney and was actually diagnosed because her coworkers after law school encouraged her to see someone. (Turns out the gigantic case load, lack of funding for extra resources, and hectic/stressful environment at the PD office exacerbated the symptoms of her then untreated ADHD. Who woulda thunk it?? Lol.) Now she has her own practice. It's small and there is only one employee - me, who also has ADHD - but we've kept it alive for just over a year now!
There is definitely some added stress when our symptoms collide. She's forgetful with appointments so I write down every single thing in our fancy schedule book.... and then she proceeds to temporarily lose it 10 times throughout the day. She tells me that a phone number on a scrap of paper is important, so I put it in a very safe place until I can properly add it to the file, and pretty much immediately forget where that safe place is.
However, I firmly believe that her ADHD helps her to look at cases from every possible angle and flush out every possible scenario - which makes her a better attorney. Plus she can almost always correctly give you a specific statute number on the spot which I can't prove is part of her individual ADHD superpowers, but I think it is. I can't remember where I set that file 30 seconds ago, but I can tell you almost verbatim what story our client told us about their case a month ago and where I think there might be holes based on subtle changes in tone or body language and my hyperfocus is awesome when it's research time.
Despite all that word vomit I do have a point and it is this: ADHD is hard and frustrating and often gets in the way and complicates things, but it also gives you very specific superpowers, even if you haven't quite pinpointed them yet. Keep up the good work and use your ADHD powers to be a helluva attorney! Congratulations again and I hope you continue to see progress in your therapy!

Step 1) choose easy major in college and get a 3.5 or better despite barely attending class
Step 2) pwn the LSAT
Step 3) apply to all the T14 and go to the best school you get, ideally CCN, but could be MPV
Step 4) get top 80% of class or better grades
Step 5) if CCN successfully fog mirror at OCI, if MVP be somewhat chill and fratty at OCI
