I liked R.E.M. a lot in high school and they are all smart, nice guys with good taste but man, I just never want to listen to them anymore. Somewhere around Monster I lost all interest. The limited guitar playing and lack of sonic depth, the boring arrangements, the mewling vocals, the poor production choices and terrible mandolin playing and clunky videos, their catalog feels very inert to me. He has a BA in English from Berkeley and writes most of the songs himself. The lyrics are usually rather deep and brooding, but some of the songs have been set to poppy guitar chords and timing, which actually presents an interesting juxtaposition. Dumb radio stations don't bother to listen to the lyrics and made them a pop sensation for a few years in the late 90s.
Take Semi-Charmed Life, for instance. You might hear this in a grocery store as middle aged housewives with delicate sensibilities push their carts down the "gluten free" aisle. The song is sandwiched between two pop-fluff studio written shitsongs. Maybe between some Madonna and some old Four Seasons shit. But did you know the song was actually about crystal meth addiction?

This shouldn't be a pop song, but the chord progressions really fool people. If you dig deeper into the library, you'll find some incredibly moving and slower songs that explore loss, mental illness, and depression in a way that most pop musicians would never touch. enescu octet is just an incredible piece. i remember the exact moment that i "got" the 4th movement. incredibly ambitious writing and as fully realized as any symphony.
back in the day, in romania, i met the musicologists who'd reconstructed the 4th and 5th enescu symphonies, both of which were complete in short score with orchestration notes but scattered among thousands of unsorted papers. great men, and one of them was himself a very good composer. miss those days

Go listen to a bunch of pre-Armstrong "jazz" records, and then work your way through the early Hot Five catalogue, and maybe you'll have a sense of how revolutionary he actually was as a force within the development of Jazz's fundamental tonality/vocabulary. It's very easy when looking back on revolutionary artists to undervalue just how much they shook up the status quo. Artistic greatness and importance at the highest levels if not just about pure instrumental technique--if it was, Miles Davis literally wouldn't even warrant a footnote in a Jazz history book. There is a zero percent chance that Wynton would rate himself as a greater artist than Armstrong, and it's because Wynton himself would almost certainly concede that Armstrong was simply a creative musical genius on a different level. (To be clear, I agree with you that Wynton is probably the GOAT trumpet player in a purely technical sense, he's a great interpreter of other men's music, and he is 100% justified in shitting on modern jazz.) |

Beethoven, I don't see this argument. Because he wasn't nearly as prolific as Mozart he wrote substantially fewer "student" works (i.e., compositions that were completed before he really found his distinctive voice), and he has one of the most distinctive artistic voices in music history. What's the basis for your claim here, you're just sick of hearing Fur Elise and the 1st Movement of the "Moonlight" Sonata? |

Beethoven was one of the greatest and most skilled musical architects of all time. Go pick up Charles Rosen's "The Classical Style" if you want a 300 page exhaustive analysis of his supremacy. The sonata form arguably reached its apex with him, with is a staggering claim to make considering that it remained the de facto framework for "serious" composition until the early 20th century, and there were no shortage of great composers who followed in his footsteps. The consistent economy and brilliance of his treatment of musical materials is mindblowing; he definitely wasn't just throwing a bunch of simple shit together and then MAKE IT LOUD NOW ADD TIMPANI CUE AUDIENCE APPLAUSE.
There are weaknesses and foibles in his style that sophisticated listeners can chuckle at, but I'm pretty sure you actually just described Tchaikovsky brother. |
