If it was caught before the kids started then there's no question everyone would agree that retracting the offer of admission makes sense. Even aside from the fraud which they may not have known about, it presumably was necessary for them to get admitted. And I get how "ok, if you started and it is your second day then you're expelled." But say it was caught the day before graduation or the day after. Now what? |

When I applied to school, things were already super competitive and people were doing stuff like making up clubs and newspapers where theyre “president” and “editor in chief.” Even if they don’t actually make up ECs, half of the ECs are fluff anyway. Some guy said he was gay in his essay (this was like 1999-2000, when it would’ve still kinda been a bigger deal). All that stuff are different degrees of lying, some shadier than others, but end result is still all the same. I’m sure now people make up even more fluff for resumes. Sure there are candidates photoshopping themselves helping refugees in Haiti.
That’s why I’m surprised the parents charged went this route when they had so much to lose to their careers and reputation. Buying your way in (the legit way) is super straight forward and at least some of these people have the money for it. Either they can’t resist a good deal for cheap or they get off the idea of a scam. |

In-process degrees should be expelled but allowed to reapply via normal transfer admissions process and, if rejected, transfer credits to another school that they transfer into.
If it’s shown that the kids knew or should have known (eg if they were also in on the sat scam where they lied about having a learning disability to get extra time), then that should weigh into any future applications (at their current school or elsewhere) and should get a (worse) transcript notation.
Edit: on second thought, if it’s shown they knew that they were involved in the sat scam, degrees should be revoked, not just given a bad notation. |
