The thing that is so strange about this is that we pretty much figured out how sinks work decades ago. Every modern design trend in sinks makes them less fit for their intended use.

Vessel sinks are the worst, they truly suck ass for several reasons.

I HATE the small bathroom mirror trend. Putting a 12" x 12" portrait mirror over the sink is insulting. Give me the 80s full size mirrors any day.

I hate these huge modern chandeliers that look like medieval torture racks or bird cages.

I hate stairway railings that are basically several pieces of wire.

Not sure I love putting microwave ovens way down low on cabinets, almost to the floor, what a pain in the ass if you want to microwave something or pick up a hot bowl out of it.

Small toilet seats where you have to hold your dick to avoid touching the edge of the toilet seat when you shit

the "white kitchen" trend (completely pushed by HGTV) is a bit much. Kitchen's dont have to be white

Agreed on the microwaves. Also seems like that much more to break the the door that rolls out being at knee-level. Not sure why wall ovens are deemed ok to look at but microwaves are not.

"I HATE the small bathroom mirror trend. Putting a 12" x 12" portrait mirror over the sink is insulting. Give me the 80s full size mirrors any day."

My entire wall above the sink is a mirror, just as the house gods intended.

"I hate stairway railings that are basically several pieces of wire."

Are you talking about the tension cables? I think those are fine in the right setting.

"Small toilet seats where you have to hold your dick to avoid touching the edge of the toilet seat when you shit"

That's not a trend, is it? My sense is that elongated bowls are becoming more common.

Rainfall showerheads. Anyone choosing one of these has never actually used one. They look cool and are nice for 10 seconds, but having water spraying on your head the whole time sucks.

what about those hip level shower heads - I assume those are annoying as well? Part of a shower is that you need to get away from the water to soap off.

I had an old house from the 1930s that had original body sprays that still worked. There was novelty value but I only turned them on a couple of times. They get in the way of soaping up, and don't spray hard enough to have a pleasant massaging effect like hot tub jets.

Wife and I shower together a lot and I'd like a normal second shower head. Other than that I think a lot of this is a waste.

Why do you have to step out of the water to soap up? Do you think the soap has to sit on your body a certain length of time to be effective?

The point of soap is that when it comes in contact with skin + water it makes your skin more slippery and anything stuck will fly off. Being in or out of the water doesn't affect that.

The point of soap isn't to kill bacteria on your skin and leave the carcasses there.

I've lived in open concept my whole life (grew up with an open concept, apartments were open concept, first purchased home the entire first floor was one very large room, second home we owned same deal except for office on first floor was isolated

Open concept doesn't feel weird. It actually kicks ass for families: you can socialize while everyone's doing their own thing, kids playing video games, a parent cooking, etc.

But if you're entertaining, it sucks: sound carries way too far so gets very loud with unrelated conversations, and dirty kitchen is visible to everyone.

the thing is, xo is childless and barren, so of course they don't recognize the benefits

disagree on the following:

-living rooms with doors to porch/deck (this is a nice feature)

-walk in pantry (these are 180)

-carpets (within reason - like for the bedroom only)

"smart" homes are incredibly hard to integrate well and super fucking expensive. and the benefits are overstated. if someone were to walk into my house right now and even if Arlo alerted me, the faggot cops would NEVER get there in time, but i would get to watch the thieves (who have all become hip to cameras and now cover their faces) rob my house.

Painting over perfectly good wood cabinets/trim. I can understand doing it if the woodwork was shitty low-grade stuff to begin with, and the paint is just a low-budget way to stave off a more comprehensive renovation for a few years.

But I often see kitchens that had great cabinetry get whitewashed in the name of trying to look more modern.

re: visible cabinet hardware

Having concealed cabinet hinges is a very under-appreciated feature of cabinetry. Why? Because it makes it 10x easier to get a cheap & easy new look from your cabinets via swapping out knobs & handles.

If the hinges are exposed and you want new knobs, you either have to match the knobs to the hinges, or replace both the knobs and the hinges. Both these paths are TTT. Trying to match knobs to the existing hinges is bad because it limits your color palette, and generally the hardware color is the primary thing that you're trying to change in the first place (e.g. the totally 90's look of bright brassy hardware on golden oak cabinets). And you don't want to go the other way either if you don't have to, because replacing hinges is a pain in the ass.

I know you were probably commenting more on the trend of knobs and handles being absent on some modern cabinetry, but this is just a little thing I though I'd bring up

I'm generally not a big fan of farmhouse sinks. It's a weird meme that makes no sense. They're big AND often not deep enough, the sides are so thick they take up extra space... why? A nice underhung stainless steel sink that is deep and takes up less space, plus some good granite seems cr. I want to see the granite, not the sink.

And speaking of countertops, wtf is with the quartz obsession??? Not actually more durable, still STAINS and feels like shit, obviously a fake material. Why not get the real thing?

Those laundry room hall tree cubbies where each kid has their own little locker with a hook. You could just put in a closet in those spaces and have room for 20 coats instead of 3 and not have to worry about keeping it perfectly organized because you can close the fucking door.

I hate open concept floor plans and every house built within the last 20 years has this.

I don't want to see clear across my house from the front door, through the living room, into the kitchen, and out the back window. I'm not paying $600,000 to life in a glorified tent. Give me hallways and shit.
