Speaking as someone who is in BigLaw, it’s clear what a truly horrible decision this was. Any smart person with average or better social skills (such as myself) who decides to go into BigLaw (or law in general) has really demonstrated that they have very poor judgment. Perhaps it’s just being short sighted. High odds of short-term success and low odds of a decent long-term outcome. I just don’t see, looking back, how this path looked better than business.

I regret it. Mostly because I went 200k in the hole for it. May have been worth it had I gone somewhere else on full scholarship, but I unfortunately bought into the whole T14 or bust mentality.

Companies are shrinking biglaw by hiring firms less and will eventually find it hard to find good attorneys (either to represent them or to poach for future in-house hires).

most people realize it within 6 months of their first year. 2L SA does a good job of fooling you into believing that your experience will be different. It's the people who stay in biglaw past year 4, when they should no longer have loans, who are literal subhumans.

I noticed when I was a waiter there were certain types of people that naturally gravitated to work at chain restaurants.

I gravitated towards mom and pop restaurants. Only when truly desperate would I apply to a chain restaurant.

The chain restaurants I worked at were Annabelle's, Old Spaghetti Factory, and Rockin' Baja Lobster (their "Langostino lobsters" are actually crawfish btw).

A study should be done about this because I find it fascinating.

I connected with just about nobody at a chain restaurant. I hated my co-workers. Materialistic, superficial, self-absorbed, shallow.

The servers at mom-and-pops were down-to-earth, salt-of-the-earth people. Chain waiters act like trust fund babies that were forced to work by their parents or else their allowance would be cut off entirely.

I imagine that law students attracted to BigLaw are cut from the same cloth as the waiters stuck in chain restaurants.

therefore in order to succeed u have to use a tool to convert virtually guaranteed short term success into long-term financial success

in other words the credited approach is to use ur biglaw $$$ to take as many independent and absurdly high-risk/high-reward gambles as possible

while other biglaw lolyers are plowing $$$ into upscale apartments etc. i recommend living in the shittiest apartment possible with no furniture and plowing ur money into whatever the crypto du jour is

Biglaw was a smart decision for me. I also went into it with the plan to stay for 1-2 years to have on my resume and get the fuck out. Working a ton and the "stressful" environment is totally fine when you know you're very comfortable leaving after 1 year.
