Despite rebound, we are getting fucked on our 2018 bonuses due to the December market slaughter. Not a lot of money, but aggravating

It is a crapshoot.

My bonus was great this year (over 100% of target).

Wife's bonus was just ok because of internal company drama.

1/3 of last year's bonus sounds awful.

yes and boss is saying we need to work harder. fucking BS as it's almost entirely tied to fund's overall performance

I hate it when that is the official line.

"Don't like your bonus? Work harder and improve the performance of the entire fund so you get a bigger one next year!"

Wtf, you have no ability to change the performance to a degree that it will matter. If you did, then you probably should start your own fund.

IRL, they are just blaming the victim. "It's your own fault! Performance was bad and that means YOUR performance was bad!"

I don’t know if you work at a public or private company, but at a lot of private companies, the partners are willing to take most of the hit/boost for a fund’s performance year to year and they keep the bonus budget for back office fairly steady. This means you don’t see a 1/3 drop in bonus year to year but also if there’s a great year, you also don’t get a 1/3 raise in bonus.

we're fairly small and I have a pretty good view into what the collective partners take was for 2018. they definitely took a hit compared to last year, but their 2 & 20 was just fine.

But point taken, support staff got same bonus as last year. Legal and our IR girls, operating in that in between zone, got collectively hosed

Is your boss willing to make it up in other ways? My last gig constantly had bonuses slightly slashed and minimal annual salary bumps (like 5k), but my boss let me take all the vacation I wanted and I got to work remotely from Chicago. When I left to a new company and HR was asking why I never used any Paid Time Off, boss was a bro and was like email me how many days you have remaining. If it happens to match the maximum amount of days you can carry over into the next year that is fine. Got paid the maximum amount of accruable PTO.

Now at a place where historically, bonuses have been paid out 100%. But we'll see.

Old boss was like that but new boss is not. He actually keeps a log of all our vacation days on the share drive and wants us to schedule them at least two months in advance so no overlap. Makes some sense but there was already conflict during dead times like week btw Christmas and New Year.

To be fair, he has no pull on comp. There are four partners at the fund and they make all the decisions.
