I live in NYC and make about $80k. I consider myself middle class. I have a nice apartment in a nice neighborhood (with a roommate and in Brooklyn but still). I go out to bars, lounges and clubs all the time and I eat out and order takeout multiple times a week (admittedly I am subsidized by my BF on a lot of this stuff when he is in town).i spend a few hundred dollars at the hair salon once a month (#blackgirlproblems lol), I belong to a gym (YMCA so probably the cheapest option available). I have no school or credit card or medical debt. I have a cat and have had to spend hundreds of dollars on him at the vet for various medical problems. I take dance classeses. I travel domestically and internationally all the time. I have $100k saved.
If I made anywhere close to 250k (half of $500k household income) I would feel as though I'd won the lottery and have no idea what to do with all that cash. I literally have enough z$ for everything I want to do on my current salary. |

I paid for law school with scholarships and loans. I made $1M+ in the 5 years after law school by killing myself at a biglaw job. I made good decisions with that money and am now very well set up financially.
But yes, family wealth is fairly predictive of personal success in this country, and class mobility is a myth. |
