psychologically damaging childhoods literally change your biology -- epigenetic expression; completely fucked neurotransmitters; rampant inflammation and high cortisol levels; and a lot of really bad psychological obsessions, anxieties, and ticks that are extremely difficult to eliminate because they are so deeply ingrained over such a long period, when your brain is particularly malleable.
not claiming at all to have it anywhere near as bad as those who suffered sexual abuse or were beaten (though I did have things thrown at me, like remote controls, and witnessed a lot of things broken and tossed in anger). my father was borderline personality disorder; had a vicious temper, very mean, and often utterly berated his children. constant intimidation & yelling. gambling addict who expected me to sit next to him during every sports game and watch his violent mood swings and if I'd get up and leave he'd just rip into me and call me a pussy. it was ridiculous. also was brutally nasty if i made a mistake or didn't perform to his high expectations every baseball game. walking on eggshells every day, and there was always some kind of crisis and fight going on in my house.
you can act like that shit doesn't have a lasting impact, but it does. i ultimately did improve a lot of my resulting issues over time, though, after i moved out and got away from the constant exposure. |
