Assume working in the financial district. Looking for most budget friendly scenario. Willing to commute 30-45 minutes, maybe even an hour. What's expected rent downtown and outside of downtown?

Downtown —4K for a one bedroom. Can be higher or lower obviously, but I think that’s about market for a cheap unit in an OK neighborhood.

East Bay with convenient commute—maybe 1 or 2 thousand less.

Was already planning to do so...is it better to live in Oakland? What are the best areas for cost efficient, under the radar living?

Oakland 12th Street BART and Lake Merritt BART will get you to downtown SF faster than most neighborhoods in SF, and are on the front waves of gentrification

That and the apartments are nicer. But Oakland can be pretty fucking sketchy.

Look before you rent but there are some nice neighborhoods now and much of downtown itself is very nice. Berkeley’s a more distant commute but worth considering. Rockridge in Oakland as well.

Have never done it but would be pretty cool. Maybe not as awesome as commuting from a mansion on Bainbridge Island to downtown Seattle in the summer.

Precisely why sane people with empathy aren’t conservatives—just imagine having something massively valuable that will generate tons of money with little ingenuity or effort—that’s how generational wealth happens.

Mortgage is cheaper than rent around there IIRC. If you own free and clear renting is a great use of your assets.
