Seems like they just literally make more shots than prior players and they take all sorts of crazy 3s and make them. Imho older players should have practiced more so they made more shots

He barely shot 3s bc it just wasn't a part of NBA offenses at that time. He also took bailout 3s and contested 3s. But Larry Legend was one of the greatest shooters of all time. Put him in this league and he be one of the best shooters, easily.

Just look at his career. The more 3s he shoot per game, the higher his 3 point percentage.

who says they couldn't? thats a bad assumption. the game is just different today in regard to what coaches allow players to do.

Just look at Brook Lopez. He didn't magically learn how to shoot...the game changed and coaches allowed him shoot from 3. It's really that simple. Sure, there are more good shooters today, the game is evolving as it always has. But, great shooters from the past are still great shooters. And thats because shooting is a large part genetics.

Skill and practice are alone both necessary but not sufficient. Curry takes thousands of 3s a week in practice.

you can get better, but there is a real cap on how good you can get. Changing your form is almost impossible after a certain age (tweaks happen and are helpful tho) and some people just lack shooting touch.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/6r89te/can_someone_explain_the_obsession_with/

Hand-checking sounds like a tiny thing, but in fact when it was legal the game was far more physical, at least on the perimeter. Defensive players were like offensive linesmen, they couldn't hold but they sure could push and impede progress towards the basket.

The turning point came when the zone was legalized in 2001-02. After a couple of years, the league quickly realized that defenses had become too good now that the zone was legal. Offense was down around the league. The 2004 Pistons are known as a championship team with no offensive stars but a stifling defense, yet they weren't the only great defense from that short era.

So in 2004-05 the league introduced new rules to curtail hand-checking, clarify blocking fouls and call defensive three seconds to open up the game. The results were immediate. Before the change, the MVPs were Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett, defensive stalwarts. After the change, the MVPs were Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, known more for their perimeter offense than their defense.

And perimeter players have won every single MVP since the change -- Nash, Nowitzki, Bryant, James, Rose, Durant, Curry, and Westbrook. The rules opened up the perimeter game and that's the way the league likes it.

Also don't forget free of movement rules, moving screens and prevalence of the zero step. It's a different game.

You can't even really touch up guys cutting across the lane anymore. Curry would get beat the hell up running around all those screens at this size in the late 90s early 2000s.

Yeah but it does seem like part of it is that teams were too stupid for decades to realize 3 points is more than 2 points.

Kind of like how when I was 10 years old I never understood why players were never given credit for walks even though it was almost the exact same thing as a single, and this was the prevailing wisdom until 2002 when "ivy league geniuses" realized walks weren't bad.

tyft. probably the most coherent explanation of the NBA evolution. made sense to legalize zone considering international leagues allowed it and you want to standardize rules for global popularity.

also makes sense that grinder teams like the pistons and spurs resulted in terrible ratings. but the classic days of 80s and 90s are gone.

"the classic days of 80s and 90s are gone."

Why?

Couldn't the NBA just revert to those rules and move the 3-point line back to restore the old EV of the shots?
