I played bass in this "alternative" rock band in the 90s. Every band in the 90s was alternative so that isn't saying anything.
We used to rent rehearsal studios an hour from my home. At the time I was working minimum wage as a pharmacy technician after failing out of ug so these rehearsal studios plus the gas for a hour drive each way was expensive.
The two Jamaican brothers who were the lead singer and lead guitarist were ALWAYS late, as were the two shrews who were rhythm guitar and backup vocals so the only two people who showed up on time were me and the drummer.
We had this upcoming gig in NYC at this place called 23 West. The drummer and I were pissed that everyone was always late for practice, among other things.
There was this one song we did where the song was supposed to end with just drums and bass. The band was supposed to walk off the stage one by one until it was just me and the drummer left, but they stopped walking off the stage at gigs.
So the drummer and I rehearsed going into Freebird when the rest of the band stayed on stage. I played the Freebird melody with the high end of my bass.
When I started playing Freebird, with the drummer following my lead, it caught the rest of the band by surprise and they did their best to improvise, but it was sloppy as fuck and they were embarrassed. The crowd loved it, though, and started yelling for other Skynrd songs like Sweet Home Alabama.
After the show I asked the rhythm guitarist what she thought of Freebird and she goes, "I HATED IT!"
They kicked me out the next day.
