within 6 months of diagnosis, something like 2/3rds of all cancer patients have no assets left

that was the gist of a news story on a study that came out about 6 months ago...that was when i let my health insurance go and just went on the free VA plan...then a couple months later another news story came out...oh, it's only about 40% that are broke...no, they changed the wording on it--about 40% of cancer patients had "trouble paying their bills withing 6 months of diagnosis"...see, the first study was the truth...then the cancer cartel came up with a bogus study to act as some kind of mental eraser for the first study...

america is a fucking scam...the media may have blackmailed the cancer cartel with that first story and then charged the cancer cartel big time for running the second story...i have been watching these fuckers run their scams for decades...i first starting reading the newspapers in the 1960s...they can't pull the wool over my eyes nowadays as easily as they did back then.

when a chemotherapy is performed and the cancer cells aren't completely eradicated, the chances of remission are very high. this is because the chemo tends to kill the weakest cancer cells, selecting for the stronger cancer cells. when the cancer returns, the cells are much more resilient than before.

Yes.

Look at what they are doing with breast cancer. Literally EVERYONE is getting chemotherapy. It is insane.

Everyone now gets some sort of chemotherapy and there seems to be no or minimal rational thought behind it.

Whereas radiotherapy becomes increasingly precise, it becomes pushed further and further away as a treatment modality.

If you look at immunotherapy--it has been around for like 60 years and only just in the past 20 years has it becum such a hot topic because big pharm is pumping billions into it. 99.5% of trials in immunotherapy are cumplete adbject failures. But you can make innumerable patents on them. Whereas there is no $$$$$$$$$ for them in rsdiotherapy.

Seems dumb to assess chemo as a drug for all cancers, when it’s range of effectiveness is from 0% to like 98% depending on the cancer. For someone with metastatic Hogkin’s for example it’s the only possible treatment and the difference between certain death and a pretty likely cure.

Yes a not insignificant portion of survivors developed second maligancies, but it was always a breast, prostate, or rectal cancer which may have arose on its own so it was impossible to attribute one way or the other.

They still use radiation but now it is involved field and not mantle.

Ewing's Sarcoma. Combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Dad didn't tell me until I was older, but I was given 30% odds of surviving 2 years. I was also in the first experimental group where they didn't automatically amputate the effected limb. Panel of 5 docs voted 3-2 in favor of trying to save my leg. I responded well to treatments and never relapsed.

Every other kid I knew from the hospital and cancer camp with Ewing's ended up dying, usually during a relapse after being deemed cured/cancer-free for a year or two. My first hospital friend/roommate, a black kid my age named Dwan, died three months after I was initially admitted.

At this point, no. Just basic annual physicals like anyone else and full cardiology workups every 5 years.

Only scare came a few years after I finished treatment when I had an abnormal x-ray. I was a teen at that point and truly terrified, since I knew a recurrence was a death sentence. They eventually determined it was just scar tissue from my initial bone biopsy and radiation treatments. Thankfully, no scares since then.

I don't know why treatment was so effective for me. I do know that I got way sicker from my chemo treatments than other kids (non-stop vomiting and literally bedridden for days) which is probably a sign that I was more sensitive to the treatments and it was doing more full scale damage to my cells (and cancer cells). I also believe my Catholic faith played a role. After I was diagnosed, my belief allowed me to make peace with my possible death and gave me comfort that it was a part of God's plan.

One other thing to note is that I'm convinced the experience screwed me up psychologically for life and caused my later struggles with anxiety and depression. My fight or flight response is very intense and immediate with the slightest stressors.

Sorry to muck up this thread reliving my cancer glory days, but I was convinced my cancer was caused by the factory down the street from my house. We had a cancer cluster in my neighborhood. Two of my good friends in grade school had leukemia (both survived) and my sister's best friend died of leukemia when she was 12. No one ever sought out legal help that I know of. Interesting to note that a similar thing is occurring in Pittsburgh right now with a cluster of Ewing's cases (which are extremely rare).

Here's a good rundown on different chemo agents and their effect on cell growth. https://www.cancer.org/treatment/treatments-and-side-effects/treatment-types/chemotherapy/how-chemotherapy-drugs-work.html

Personally, I was given doxorubicin (I knew it as Adriamycin as a kid), cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan), Vincristine and actinomycin-D, along with 6 weeks of daily localized radiation treatments.

Where do you get this shit, OP? Which conspiracy theory website directs your bizarre unearthing of papers from nearly two decades ago?

It is cr that this paper pwns chemo, but only for the specific instance of entirely chemo-based treatment (i.e., using chemo to completely eradicate a cancer is fruitless)

But chemo is still useful in shrinking a tumor before surgical intervention. (The paper only analyzes treatments where the success can be directly attributable to chemo by itself, and thus does not address neoadjutant chemo)

tl;dr paper does not pwn chemo + radiation/surgery used together, only chemo used by itself

No, even in situations where it is used neoadjuvantly (e.g. any surgical or radiotherapy treatment) it adds modest at best benefits.

In situations where chemo is used with surgery only the cure rate is generally abysmal.

Those who become chronically infected tend to have something in common: their immune systems are compromised in some way that makes it impossible for them to fully get rid of an infection. The man Lauring studied was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer of the lymph nodes, which likely hampered the production of immune cells that respond to new viruses. The man who shed poliovirus for at least 28 years suffered from a disorder called common variable immune deficiency, which decreases the number of antibodies in the blood and makes it harder for the body to fight off infections.

People with weakened immune systems provide viruses like Sars-CoV-2 with a unique environment. Instead of clearing an infection quickly, an immunocompromised person might only partially wipe out an infection, leaving behind a population of genetically-hardier viruses that rebound and begin the cycle all over again. In these people, a virus can evolve at remarkable speed. “The whole time, their immune system is effectively beating [the virus] up. So the virus has a chance to learn how to live with the human immune system,” says Emma Hodcroft, a postdoctoral research at the University of Bern in Switzerland who works on Nextstrain – an open-source project that tracks the genetic changes of Sars-CoV-2 and other pathogens.

This is similar to what’s happening on a global scale. Slowly, natural selection might push the virus to transmit more easily, or become resistant to our immune response, but in the pressure-cooker environment of a single human body these changes can accelerate. Ravi Gupta, a professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Cambridge studied the evolution of Sars-CoV-2 in a man with lymphoma who had undergone chemotherapy and had been chronically infected with the virus for 102 days before dying.

After the man was treated with blood plasma from a recovered Covid-19 patient, at day 63 of his illness, the genetic makeup of the Sars-CoV-2 viruses within him started to shift. By day 82, viruses with a six-letter deletion in the spike gene were now the dominant population. This deletion – called ΔH69/V70Δ – also seems to be partly behind the increased transmission of the B.1.1.7 variant, as it makes it easier for the virus to enter host cells. The same mutation was also found in another chronically infected patient, a 47-year-old woman admitted to hospital in Saint Petersburg who has been ill for more than four months.

Within the man Gupta and his colleagues studied, the composition of the viral population kept changing. By day 86, the ΔH69/V70Δ population had been overtaken by a subset of Sars-CoV-2 with a different mutation in its spike gene. A week later both of these previous populations were barely anywhere to be seen and a new mutant had become the most populous strain.

For Gupta, this genetic tug-of-war is a likely explanation for the emergence of the UK variant. “What’s going on biologically within a person is probably going to explain this because there are very different selection pressures going on,” he says. Since Sars-CoV-2 infects cells relatively quickly, in most cases it enters a host, replicates and then swiftly infects someone else, leaving little time for the virus to acquire many genetic changes. When the virus enters the body of someone who is already immunocompromised, their body is constantly applying evolutionary pressure on the virus – pushing it to evolve into new and, in some cases, more infectious forms.

Definitely not true. Plenty of head to head trials against placebo show effectiveness for overall survival. For example, 20 years ago a patient with advanced RCC would be dead within 18 months, but now many patients are living 5-8 years.

Holy shit this is dumb as fuck. The study is from 2004. Huge strides have been made in cancer therapies since then. In 2004 tyrosine kinase inhibitors barely existed, let alone checkpoint therapies, let alone checkpoint therapies in combination with TKIs.
