If I recall right, DVD's themselves had a lot of trouble displacing VHS. Video stores still had tons of tapes, with slowly growing DVD sections, well into the 2000s. I think it was when Netflix with the mail-order DVD's came on strong that VHS really collapsed

why are poasters' wallets always empty? Just to hide your stack's size? Won't it eventually be tied with your "real" wallet that someone can lookup later? Discuss.

I think most people didn't really care other than being on the winning side. But IIRC, the big pushes of the day was PS3 including Blu-ray and MS not being willing to include HD-DVD by default. Instead, they sold an add-on drive.

Because a bunch of people owned PS3s (including me) there was a huge install base for blu-ray and it ultimately won.

What kind of shitty memory do you have?

VHS tapes caught in the VCR all the time and would destroy a good chunk of the print. Plus, over the time tape would decay so half the frame would be missing for a few seconds or minutes.

It was really fucking shitty to own a VHS tape for more than a couple years.

Eventually the DVD players hacked this lock but early on it was painful to start up any movie.

Every now and then I’ll be in some dingy convenience store and see a rack of DVDs, not even Blu-Ray, just standard definition DVDs. And they are always middling forgotten pictures like Ladder 49 or Don’t Say a Word. You can buy three of them for like 5 dollars. I always wonder what sort of subterranean retrograde creature buys those things.

yeah i remember the switch. i saw all my favorite movies as a kid on VHS. i didnt think dvd was all that superior in quality, seemed about the same to me.

blu ray on the other hand was a leap forward in terms of image quality, both from DVD and VHS, obviously.

I can't imagine anyone ever being dumb enough to think DVDs wouldn't catch on.

Let's see: smaller, more durable, doesn't need to be rewound, easy scene selection, higher quality video, higher quality audio, subtitles, other languages.

The fact that you couldn't record to them was a big drawback at the time. People used to to actually record movies and TV shows off cable tv and didn't necessarily like have to having to pay $14.99 for them all of a sudden.

Play a DVD 1000 times versus a tape.

Movies on VHS obviously aren’t worth keeping. But my parents have saved at least 100 VHS tapes that they recorded stuff on. Dad has some VHS tapes of the Reds winning the World Series in 1990 and the Bengals losing a couple of Super Bowls in the 1980s. The picture quality is horrible, but they’re fun to watch. Mom was on Jeopardy in 1979 when Art Fleming was the host, and we have it on tape.

Meanwhile my boomer dad accidentally taped OVER a tape of a major family trip we took b/c that tape happened to be in the VCR when he wanted to record his favorite cooking show. AFAIK he still has no idea the trip recording is gone. We just quietly put the tape back and never told him lol.

People were very proud of their DVD collections. Some people use them as decorations. People stole them all the time in college.

the fact that DVDs, CDs, and CD-ROMs all looked the same and fit into the same cases meant that I would find shit like Warcraft III in the DVD case that should have been Season 1 of South Park

I never understood why Boomers went ALL-IN with their DVD collections.

By that point they had personally witnessed 3/4 media formats come and go yet dutifully filled their walls with deluxe box sets.

Yes. Conan O'Brien did a joke around then as part of his fake ads segment of a Vietnam vet's video rental store where the slogan for the store was "To me, DVD will always stand for 'Die, Vietcong, Die!'", which I thought was hilarious

They would sell both widescreen and pan and scan versions of a movie, and then your family would yell at you for getting the widescreen.
