Because a bunch of people owned PS3s (including me) there was a huge install base for blu-ray and it ultimately won. |

VHS tapes caught in the VCR all the time and would destroy a good chunk of the print. Plus, over the time tape would decay so half the frame would be missing for a few seconds or minutes.
It was really fucking shitty to own a VHS tape for more than a couple years. |

blu ray on the other hand was a leap forward in terms of image quality, both from DVD and VHS, obviously.
