It's gotten a lot worse for new employees

Basic Benefit Plan

The basic benefit plan is a pension in which the employee receives a set amount, regardless of the amount he or she has contributed. The amount depends on length of service and “high-3” average. “High-3” refers to the highest three consecutive years of service. Often, those are the last three years you worked, but if you held a higher paying position earlier in your career, your high three could be during that time.

This calculation only takes into account your basic salary. It does not include overtime, bonuses or other extra payments. Your years of credible service are reported on the SF-50 form you receive at least once per year. Then, the agency you work for adds a 1% multiplier to your High-3. However, employees who are 62 or older with at least 20 years of service will receive a multiplier of 1.1%. The formula for the basic benefit plan is: High-3 Salary x Years of Service x Pension Multiplier = Annual Pension Benefit. If you worked for 25 years and earned $75,000 per year, your monthly payment would be around $1,560, according to the formula.

Thank you for this.

My friends I think make like 140K does that sound right. Late 30's. Work for a cool part of the federal gov't.

What do you figure that will top out at? They will be lifers.

I think one started out of college (has been in different federal orgs and the other started at 30)

140 * let's say 30 years in government * 1.1 multiplier = X / 12 = monthly payment

they'll probably make more than 140 though as it's their high 3

cool part of govt? so like state dept?

I come in at 9:30-10 or so, put my stuff down, answer any super urgent emails (so once a month), then leave and go get Starbucks

I come back, check the news, check xo, clear my inbox

I check in with subordinates who do most of the work

I get lunch

I post on XO

I have a meeting with our communications staff to explain how something will work

I post on XO

I answer a few questions from a subordinate

around 4ish I start thinking about when I want to leave

Im a GS14 in are country. Would you rather be in my shoes than DC? I could move there and cop a 15 fairly easily but not sure if its worth it. Any thoughts on why we get paid less than DCmos for the same work?

Some parts of ARE COUNTRY make very close to DC

Some parts of ARE COUNTRY make less, but the adjustment in living is, in my opinion, too small (e.g. Minneapolis is like 9% lower than DC but I am sure you can find housing for much much less than 9% there)

It's just whatever their gay consultants said to say

I wouldn't leave ARE COUNTRY for DC, it's simply not affordable at all

my spouse makes like 250K and it's the only reason we can afford this racket

Do you have any plans on going INHOUSE in the future to make in the $200s? Are you in line for PSLF? As a side note, if the economy goes to shit next year we are gunna be in a good spot my fed brother.

Yes, I am copping PSLF but I didn't have a ton of debt (50K originally)

Very difficult question. I could make more, but do I ultimately "have less" because of FERS?

There's probably a magic number at which point it makes sense to leave, but it's probably upper 200s, and even then, I would want more because of the added risk of leaving the government

I'm stuck here forever in my adult playpen, most likely

We are set if there's another ITE, but I do worry that ultimately the feds will just say "lol nope" and not pay the pension because they'll be unable to afford it (like 40 years from now)
