For me the issue is the phrasing of the question itself. Asking a witness if they committed a crime while on the stand for an unrelated civil trial is different from asking if they had been charged. The latter seems allowable. The former should not be, especially if the "correct" answer depends upon the discretion of the court. I just can't see civil judges wanting to get mired in what constitutes a reasonable basis for asking a witness whether they committed a crime.
