I'd like to have a little boat to sail around NYC harbor. Pack lunch and booze. Park by the Statue of Liberty, eat, drink, chill. Cruise up the river in the fall. Hang out at yacht clubs and talk about boat stuff.

Gonna look into this.

With any boat you can possibly afford (and you cant afford a boat) you wont really be able to go anywhere.

a boat you can sleep on? I boat you can take down the coast safely - not just within a mile or two of shore? Many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Boats get exponentially expensive.

a 20 foot fishing boat is $30,000.

A 35 foot boat is $200,000.

Hmmm.

And I suppose what would qualify as a small "yacht" starts around a million.

I feel like I wouldn't have the need/want to sail far out to sea or down to Florida or whatever. Just zip around NYC/Jersey/Long Island. Maybe fish. I'd probably be looking at around 100k I guess. It's expensive but it's within reason.

Boat clubs are the biggest rip offs of all time. 5k down and a monthly payment to get on a list to rent one of the dozen or so floating shitboxes your local club has (hope one's available on your weekend!). Oh, and that's about the price of financing a decent boat anyways, but guess what, you don't own a boat.

Those boats are treated great - I actually recognize one of the boat club boats in my area because I've seen it run aground so many times.

On, and did you know you can't quit the club, you have to sell the membership?

"Working on the boat" equals drinking beer and listening to music outside without your wife. It might only be 150 if you don't like physical labor, but your wife's agenda for a Saturday is often sub-150 and she can't really criticize you for working on the boat to the same degree that she would for sitting around in your underwear all day poasting. Like is she rips on your for working on the boat at a party, all the other women are going to think "rich and good with his hands" and you can just get a new wife right there if need be.

No totally different.

Airplanes serve a functional transportation purpose. But you die in private airplanes.

Boats are just for socializing for most people and you can just rent them.

Boat ownership is great if you really value boat time and you can find a decent priced marine mechanic, but it can also be a huge pain in the ass. I assume that goes double in NYC.

Boat ownership is 180, it is my main hobby in life, and I love that boat. There is nothing I don't like about it.

It is not cheap - the boat itself cost ~30k, and the various upgrades are not cheap, but it is a fucking awesome boat and I've had some amazing adventures on it.

I don't understand guys who buy boats to just cruise. I go fishing whenever I can and have really learned my local waterway over the past decade or so. I shrimp in the fall. I got on trips to the boat. I take my kids out to the sandbar and tubing and stuff almost every weekend.

I'm on the boat a lot and most of my hobbies have something to do with being on the water. When I'm not at work and I have no responsibilities, almost 100% chance I'm on the boat.

If you're really spending time on the water, you want to have a boat that you know and you're comfortable with it's limits. Also, you can't underestimate how important it is to know your waterways, and the only way you do that is by going out on your boat on a regular basis.

Don't even bring up that scam that is Freedom Boat Club.

If you spend the money on a new (or newer) boat and take it for pro maintenance once a year, there is virtually no hard maintenance (i.e. engine repair) needed.

I virtually did no maintenance the first two years I owned my boat outside of taking it to the shop once a year.

My regular fishing hookup bought a lightly used boat and it is constantly breaking after a few days of heavy use

My parents also hated owning one back in the 80s or whatever, they still make all the usual Boomer "what's the 2nd best day of a boat owners life blah blah" jokes to this day, it's awful

Maybe if you aren't using it on the open ocean? Idk boats and cars may as well be propelled by magic spirits for all i know

My family had a boat growing up. It was a small boat used basically only for water skiing and fishing. We stored it at our house and had an SUV that could tow it, and my parents used to take it to the lake (about 30-40 minutes away) almost every weekend during the summer. Even then my dad used to constantly kvetch that he was wasting money and it would have been cheaper to just rent a boat whenever he needed one. And I'm pretty sure this is the best-case scenario in terms of time/money required to buy/maintain the boat. So if you get enough utility out of boating that it is worth the cost and hassle, sure, but know what you are getting into before you buy.

The cost, for me, is in time. Everyone who goes on my boat has fun, and the boat always works, but it's because I clean constantly, I perform the maintenance and replace things when they need it, etc. It takes a lot of time, but it's not really that expensive.

Why do people own cars? They are unused 97% of the time, take up a lot of space, you aren't sophisticated enough to avoid ripoff on maintenance, depreciate, etc.

Because you might be out of luck in a shared scheme if you ride "against flow" (downtown to suburbs in morning) because you could have a backlog of waiting riders immediately when you park (even for a short trip).

This isn't a problem with a boat! You always go back to the same dock. And there will always be a large supply of empty boats because the supply of vain idiots with money is infinite meaning a deal waiting to be had for you.

My family had a boat for over a decade. It was a ton of fun. The trick is not to overspend and get some megayacht if you don't have the means. Everything scales in price with size - docking fees, fuel costs, maintenance (you'll need bigger or multiple engines, for example), etc.
