It doesn't make sense that capable participants would choose to avoid it. It's not time consuming and gifted mathematics students would easily reveal themselves to faculty through work in advanced geometry and calculus. I set all kinds of state records when I was a freshman and people thought I was my state's great hope for become a math Olympian. But I kind of plateaued as a freshman because I stopped caring about it. When I was in middle school, I used to spend hours every week working on old problems for MathCounts and other competitions. Lower-level competitions are largely a race against time, and lots of similar problems are repeated, so knowing how to solve common problems quickly is essential. So you need a certain level of natural talent, but it also requires a huge amount of grinding and working on old tests/problems. And I just burnt out when I hit high school. The amount of effort that would have been required to do really well was not commensurate with the potential reward. So I kept doing math competitions and still did well (I won a number of state championships and even more top 3 finishes), but if anything my scores regressed slightly from when I was a freshman.
