You know what, it doesn't matter now because winning the FedEx Cup now nets you the Tour Championship.

The completely ruined an event in order to make it more "exciting" and "easier to follow"

is division 1 golf like division 1 tennis where the schools recruit lots of foreigners? i would think that would be the case and would make it a lot harder to compete for a slot.

how good does one have to be to make a div 1 golf team in a power conference? like say UNC or Indiana U or U Maryland?

Yes they recuit a shit ton of foreigners. Even crappy D2 schools with scholarship $ to give out get foreign recruits. check this crappy lac in SC out, 4 of 10 guys are foreign:

https://www.cokercobras.com/sports/mgolf/2018-19/roster

D1 golf is like applying for a job and you basically have to build a resume over the course of a few years. you have to compete at the national level for a while and have proven success. A friend was a no name but got hot and won 2 ajga's in one summer and ended up with a full ride to an ACC school.

friend of mine played at coker because he lost out on a directional state school ride. couldn't crack 900 on the SAT so the school dinged him but coker didn't care.

ivies are the same way I think. They're not going to lower the admissions bar too much for golfers, you still need to be able to get in.

I have a friend who ended up being an NCAA lacrosse all-american who wanted to go to Princeton. They flat out gave him an SAT number to hit for admission and he couldn't do it so they dinged him (iirc it was either 1250 or 1300, so not rocket science).

holy shit i didn't even realize what they were doing. this is as bad as NASCAR

Beginning in 2019, the tournament adopted a new format so that its winner would also be the FedEx Cup champion. Rather than FedEx Cup points being reset for each qualifying player based on seeding, the tournament will begin with the #1 overall seed starting at 10 under par. The second seed will start at −8, the third seed at −7, and so on down to the fifth seed at −5. Seeds 6–10 will begin at −4; seeds 11–15 will begin at −3; and so on, down to seeds 26–30 who will start at even par.[5][6]

For purposes of the Official World Golf Ranking, the seeding format will be ignored. All players start at zero and the gross score of the four rounds, without regards to the seeding adjustment, will determine the winner for purposes of the ranking system. Scores without the seeding adjustment will be used to calculate points allocation.

FedEx Cup requires you to play above average golf over the entire year, anybody can get hot over 3-4 days and throw up insane scores to win a single event.

Neither Sawgrass nor East Lake are particularly difficult courses for the pros, and the courses are usually set up to encourage scoring.

winning a 30-golfer event in late September on an easy course when only 3-4 people have any real incentive to play to win is a little easier than winning a full-field event in April or May, film at 11

I am with you, actually. It hurts the tradition of each individual tournament.

For example, in tennis no one would say "I won the Western & Southern Open", but rather I won the Cincinnati Masters.

In golf, referring to your biggest career accomplishments as winning "The Rocket Mortgage Classic" or the "Farmers Insurance Open" is almost demeaning. Something like the Players or the Tour Championship is a much better name, and they'd keep that branding even if the course changed. Hell, even something like the "Valero Texas Open" is better, because what you'd really say is that you won the Texas Open, regardless of who the Sponsor was.
