Date: August 17th, 2019 4:27 AM Author: Avocado Crawly Idea He Suggested Locale not just the well-known political censorship stuff, but their algorithms are not returning as much relevant stuff as before. i do some historical research, and somewhat more obscure sources (which i know still exist because i can still reach their URLs) no longer show up in the first 5-10 pages of results, displaced by "sources" that don't even have the relevant keywords in them. this sometimes happens even if you use boolean operators to make your search more targeted.
it's kind of inexplicable that search technology would get WORSE with the advent of "big data," but google seems to be managing it. |

1. start all searches in a non-google search engine. (I prefer DuckDuckGo, but Smartpage and Bing are nice alternatives.)
2. Only trying Google if the first search engine didn't find anything useful.
At this point I don't think Google can be done without completely, but getting back into the habit of trying other engines first could better incentivize them to try to compete with Google |

I find the “book list about x” will often get you better google results than just googling “x”
