The difference is that he didn’t have to think about standardized tests at age 14, $300k of student loans, $1.2m starter homes that were $150k in 1975, $500k college tuitions for each kid etc.
His outcome was basically available to every smart and motivated person born at the right time who wanted it. This is not true for gen x and certainly not millennials, esp those who went through ITE. |

The Vietnam War was in full swing and protests were raging along with race riots. All able bodied men over 18 lived in fear of the draft and while jobs were plentiful in 1969 a year later it all crashed. I had friends who intentionally maimed themselves to avoid military service, and some who left the country. Major cities were in terrible shape. There was talk that NYC might have to be closed down as uninhabitable. Boston was pretty crappy and run down. It was generally a dark time. I was worried pretty much about myself only, and wanted not to get drafted and to get an engineering job so I could live without a roommate and afford a car. I did end up doing uniformed service and only got to work in the engineering job for two weeks before shipping out.
Today I think people are on average more optimistic, though there are some who are fearful of ecological disaster and a few who seem to have an irrational fear of Trump. I have one friend who is in the process of moving to Canada - he's a dual citizen. Generally speaking, I think global social concern peaks somewhere before old age and eventually you get to the point where long range planning is a year. I remain optimistic that common sense will prevail and that the world will continue to improve on a smoothed basis, but of course anything can happen. I general we are prosperous and happy cohort. |
