everyone i have personal knowledge of becoming successful and running with it was very smart and very self-motivated. some of them were fleeing established careers and others switched gears pretty soon after college. one example that springs to mind are an associate professor in a respectable field who realized breakfast (tenure) was never coming and was tired of the instability of academia. other was an engineer who realized he didn't like his field, probably never would, and he already had some decent CS generalized nerd knowledge from his own interests. none were underemployed fuckups who just wanted an easy way to get a decent middle-class salary without having to put in much face-to-face time with anyone.

the final sentence rules out 95% of the greasy XO doofuses who think coding is some kind of magic bullet for their fucked up lives, so pull the plug now. you don't want to be some stack of shit like peterman whining about how you deserve better opportunities before asking XO to tell you how to manufacture a viable career.

a lot of WUSTL tier college grads who did nothing very respectable after find success after a bootcamp (or something or other)

My anecdotal experiences, close to 0% succeed. I work as a data scientist in Bigtech (background is statistician) , so code every day but not a software engineer or anything.

I run into the same problems learning new languages (e.g. just learned Scala for Spark ML libraries , i.e. scala for spark stuff) - which is you can take a Python course or bootcamp or whatever, work through basic shit and feel like oh yeah I can do this yeah.

But

a) that's not how you use those skills, you're not asked to repeat a bunch of shit you just learned - you have to know how to look up what you don't know how to do, you have to be able to read the help / manuals, etc. there's a lot of shit involved that those things don't prepare you for.

Which is why

b) the ONLY way I've ever been able to get good at a programming language is being forced to use it everyday on a project at work, unless you're super gifted / talented to the point where this conversation would be moot to begin with, it's nearly impossible to just "learn" a language, you have to use it. You may learn the very basics, but you really learn it by using it working day in day out.

The only people I've seen do this route were insanely gifted , and actually this is sort of normal apparently some of the best programmers aren't even typical CS people but like physics / math people sometimes. But only a few cases I've seen and one was a math phd even worked as math AP at flagship state uni few years, then came to our bigtech company and now works on our AI team building central ML platforms and services data scientists / quants / analysts to use around our company.

FWIW the people I've seen pickup programming are always super smart and motivated to begin with, I've seen 3 of my friends who are just idle / hate their jobs etc. try to do the whole XO cliche "learn to code" route, zero of them followed through or saw any kind of success, or even had any kind of plan for how they were going to get a job after they "learned programming".

IMHO - if you have zero quantitative / technical background or skills, I have trouble seeing this as a viable / efficient route to middle class income. Say you hit the very low probability event of learning some basic python / java decently well, you have zero relevant experience, zero routes for applying / getting noticed, your target will be the bottom of the barrel jobs, competing with Indians willing to work for less. What reason would a company have to hire you over some contract worker in India for basic level coding shit? IMO this is a horrible plan, there are way easier ways to stake out a middle class life. If you have zero achievements / career success / academic success thus far in life, this is an awful route IMO and I would advise such a friend to go into real estate or some shit, not invest serious time and effort for the low chance of being allowed to compete with turds for a job you'll hate for lower/mid middle class income, I don't know where this whole "learn to code" shit started but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone I cared about.

not really. you can get the gist of a lot of stuff (even as a layman) conditional on knowing it's working code, but without knowing how to do it, you couldn't tell the difference between broken shit and production code
