Had Long Scholarly Convo w Ultraortho Rabbi On Penis Sucking At Circumcision.

Date: September 23rd, 2019 11:22 AM Author: Alcoholic house we were at a bris a couple weeks ago, and i wanted to get some clear scholarship for xo on penis sucking so i picked his brain. according to him:
- the torah commandment of metzitzah b'peh (oral suction) must be satisfied for a kosher bris
- rav moshe feinstein (who is the GOAT halachist of the 20th century) ruled that the commandment can be satisfied by sucking through a tube, to eliminate the mouth-to-mouth contact
- using the tube method, the mohel (guy performing the circumcision) just puts a sterile hollow glass tube on the penis for a split second and makes a sucking motion. the mohel doesnt ingest any blood. it's simply a formality to fulfill the commandment
- most modern orthos would use the tube method, and most ultraorthos would use actual mouth contact. doing actual mouth contact is seen by ultraorthos as the ideal/better way to perform the mitzvah, so they believe they should do mitzvah in the ideal way rather than rely on a leniency.
- there's a minority opinion (from the Chasam Sofer, an 18th/19th century rabbi) stating that a sponge can be used to fulfill the commandment. the mohel puts a sponge on the penis. this opinion isn't universally accepted like the tube method, but some also rely on this opinion. |
