He’s maxed out his yearly IRA contribution every year since he was 19, and his nest egg recently surpassed $400,000. He’s on track to retire in three years.

Text;

Daniel, 36, makes $270,000 a year as a corporate lawyer in Manhattan. But you’d never guess it if you saw his shabby apartment.

The Harvard Law grad, who declined to share his last name for privacy reasons, lives across the Hudson, in Jersey City, to avoid NYC taxes. There’s no TV, just books that Daniel picks up for about 50 cents apiece at a local church. Rice and beans fill the pantry. An armoire holds just five cheap, threadbare suits. When they tear, as they do “every six months” or so, he sews them back up. In the winter, he doesn’t even turn the heat on. “I mostly put on a bunch more layers,” he tells The Post.

Why so stingy? Daniel is a member of the growing FI/RE movement, short for financial independence, retire early. The money philosophy — essentially, save fast and early so you can quit working young — is gaining traction among millennials who have had a taste of office drudgery and want nothing to do with it. Followers combine investment hacks with old-fashioned penny pinching to build up enough savings to quit their 9-to-5, well before their 60s. They’re also committed to a monastic existence, even amid NYC’s many social temptations — drinks with co-workers, workout classes and even the odd fast-casual Friday lunch.

Enlarge ImageDaniel, 36, already has a nest egg of $400,000 thanks to savvy saving. “The most expensive pair of work shoes was $60. The others were mostly $20. Maybe one was $40, and they’re all from thrift shops in Queens, where prices are lower.”

“The most expensive pair of work shoes was $60,” says Daniel. “The others were mostly $20. Maybe one was $40, and they’re all from thrift shops in Queens, where prices are lower.”Stefano Giovannini

Although he beats himself up for his rare Chipotle splurges (“I’m not as careful as I could be,” he says), Daniel has been able to bank 70% of his attorney’s salary. He’s maxed out his yearly IRA contribution every year since he was 19, and his nest egg recently surpassed $400,000. He’s on track to retire in three years.

“I’m excited and empowered to do what I’m doing,” he says.

But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Enlarge ImageShang Saavedra

Shang Saavedra, 34, saves 50% a month and is part of a “Buy Nothing” group on Facebook. “Most of the baby stuff that I have gotten so far has been completely free,” she says.Stefano Giovannini

“There were some really hot days this summer, and I couldn’t breathe on the subway platform,” says 34-year-old Shang Saavedra, a FI/RE follower and corporate strategy consultant. She’s eight months pregnant, lives in Manhattan with her husband and, together, the couple pulls in more than six figures annually. “We decided to take a Via [car], and I can only recall twice before when that’s happened.”

The coin-conscious couple have a $25 monthly entertainment budget, never buy drinks, tailor their own clothes — and could retire today if they wanted to.

“Our savings rate right now is 50%, pre-tax,” says Saavedra.

It took her a while to get used to frugal living. During the first year, “I definitely hated it,” she says. “I had to constantly remind myself of our goals.”

Carmen Perez, 32, who stumbled onto FI/RE three years ago while looking for ways to get out of $57,000 in debt, also struggled initially.

She was so frugal, her co-workers jokingly offered to start a GoFundMe to replace her worn Oxford shoes.

“I was making six figures, and my shoes looked like they were going to fall apart,” Perez says.

But, Perez was able to save enough — while still enjoying a modest date night twice a month with her wife — to quit her well-paying job in financial services last month. She now plans to learn how to code and live off her savings while shifting her career.

Enlarge ImageCamren Perez (right) is 32 and already has a $50,000 nest egg. “Get a side hustle,” she says. “There are so many side gig opportunities in the city that can help with adding money to your savings.”

“I have the ability to pivot now, and do what I love … because we have the money in the bank to make that decision,” says Perez, who recently purchased a modest home in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Daniel, who is single, admits that FI/RE hasn’t helped his social life.

“My previous ex-girlfriend never really got on board. Her concept of what I was doing was being cheap, and depriving myself and her,” says the lawyer.

Relating to co-workers is also challenging.

“They talk all the time about the fancy restaurants, bars and Broadway shows they’re going to,” he says.

Still, he’s excited about his plans for the future. When he retires, he says he might move to Texas for its lack of income tax or somewhere in Asia with a relatively low cost of living.

“I buy 10 books for about $5 at the local church sale, and get more for free,” says Daniel.Stefano Giovannini

He looks forward to swapping his 60-hour workweek for leisure time. “I can learn all about the War of the Roses or the Roman emperors, or play a certain song on the banjo.”

In case of unexpected illness or expense, he says he’s not worried.

“The whole thing is a safety net,” he says. “I have a really high-limit credit card if I need it, and if I lost my job, I can just sell some of my investments.”

He’s also considering purchasing long-term disability insurance that would cover up to 90% of his income if he had severe health issues.

“Even if I was totally disabled and not able to do my work, I could achieve my FI/RE goal at the same speed,” he says. “I’m trying to get to a point where nothing besides death can stop me.”

$270k is a 4th-5th year BIGLAW with Cravath scale bonus. he wasn't making that much all along. probably went to LS at 29yo with a bit of savings from having a pre-LS job for about 5 years, borrowed the rest and graduated with $200k of debt or maybe a little less, paid it back in 3ish years by maxing debt payments while splitting COL with his SO, and went to pure savings for the last 2 years. the 400k probably includes 401k so a chunk of it (~75k) is from pre-tax salary.

overall no way he can retire in 4 years. maybe if he calculated based on living in a trailer in a state with no income tax and is ok never being able to do anything nice and hoping nothing goes wrong with a major car or house problem. but these FIRE people often forget healthcare when they're retiring way below Medicare age. he would need either massive ACA subsidies or Medicaid but is likely to fall in the unlucky spot that's screwed for both, especially in the red states with low taxes he can afford. and he's of course screwed if our healthcare system gets worse or there's a long-term recession or depression anytime in the next 50 years.

he may also know that he's getting somewhere from $500k to many millions when his parents croak and doesn't actually have a problem tapping the principal in his savings until then.

So basically now having a graduate degree, making 300k a year and working 16-18 hours / day means you can live in Jersey City with the same quality of life as a FOB Dago living in a LES walkup tenement 100 years ago. "Still, he’s excited about his plans for the future. When he retires, he says he might move to Texas for its lack of income tax or somewhere in Asia with a relatively low cost of living."

Good idea. Spend your earning years in a state with high income taxes, then once you're ready to retire and stop making income, move to a high sales tax and property tax state like Texas "for its lack of income tax."

people don't understand that being a social pariah actually HURTS your net worth, especially in NYC. maybe it works if you're from a town of 5,000 and everyone already knows you and you get sweetheart deals from the local innkeeper.

making connections and getting opportunities in life is what building wealth is all about. not to mention just actually living life instead of being a total incel shut-in loser that takes a long commute home every night to sleep alone because you're undatable.

i guess u can find a wife in ur 40s and have ur pick of the litter of all the cum-infested shrew leftovers. great life bro.

more like, the linear path of saving and scrimping is a red herring

most "wealthy" people I know were broke, got rich, and had giant step ups in wealth. 2 steps back, 10 steps forward kinda thing.

but yes, it's about taking risks and making educated gambles. hard to do if ur a cheapskate outcast.

The article isn't about becoming wealthy. It's about making enough to live frugally on in early retirement. This is a far more attainable goal for the majority of people than advising them to just be successful, social entrepreneurs.

guess who gets fired first in a downturn? the closet shut-in with no connections or friends.

i'm sure this already happened to him, which is why he's saved so little despite being 36. He was 25 in 2008.

What did he do with the other 230k?

A few major points:

-I specifically told the reporter (in writing!) that I don’t eat rice and beans like she describes. I admire people who do meal prep every week and average less than $2 a meal, but I work a million hours a week and I prioritize time over that marginal savings. It’s one of the many ways that I “suck,” in mustachian parlance. The reporter seems to have just decided to lie in order to make a more extreme character for her story. I think the real one is more interesting: even without being perfect, if you keep yourself focused on the goal, there are infinite ways to advance towards FI/RE.

-People are confused about my fire journey, and I can see why — the reporter did not explain it well at all. I read Investing for Dummies at age 17 or so, and right then and there decided that I’d always invest in index funds and someday I’d live off the interest. I started investing when I got my first job at 19. However, parallel to the investment drive was a drive to not jump right into the rat race. I also read a book called Delaying the Real World, and loved its message of doing something passionate and interesting after college instead of jumping into full-time work. I thought it would be easier to travel the world while very young, so I got a great job that involved doing just that. It was fantastic, and worth every minute, but it didn’t pay well. I still maxed out my IRA, and was much more frugal than I am now (though note I am not as frugal as the article claims), but it was slow going. Eventually, I decided to change gears, which led to my current career. again, I think this is a more interesting story than the one the reporter tells, but there you go. I went into law school with about $65k in investments. I had to sell a small amount of that during law school but mostly my investments remained flat. I came out with $140k in loans. I started my law firm job at 31 and got from negative $75k to zero in about 15 months. It then took about another ten months to finish paying off the loans. I prioritized them even though that’s not necessarily the most optimal strategy. I just wanted to be done with them and get guaranteed returns by paying them down.

-Frugality did not end the relationship in question. I don’t think the article says it did, either (a bit too horrified to re-read it), but regardless, the fact is that that ex simply thought frugality was kind of depressing. It had no impact on the relationship not working out, though. It was barely a topic of discussion in that relationship. Based on the huge number of questions the reporter had about my dating life, she seemed obsessed with the idea that anyone frugal must be undatable. As I told her, I’m really not even that frugal. I just don’t drink alcohol or shop for “stuff,” and I geographically tax-arbitrage and real-estate arbitrage, and am motivated by investing rather than spending. None of it has been an issue in going on dates. Interesting people like interesting people. If they find out about my FI/RE journey it’s usually a plus or neutral. If they’re turned off instantly by new ideas I wouldn’t want to date them anyway. And dates do not have to be expensive, not even when you’re a man, not even in New York City, despite the reporter’s preconceived notions.

-My apartment is kind of “shabby,” I guess, but my suits are the shit — not even slightly threadbare. I’m the best-dressed guy at the office, and it’s a pretty elite office. They’re just cheap because I got them tailored in a developing country. The reporter never saw my place or my sweet suits; only the photographer did. The suits do tear on the seams with some regularity, but that’s mostly because I bike in them. I fix the seam that ripped in like five minutes and it’s good for like a year. But I have five suits, so that’s like half a dozen seam rips a year.
