Let's see:
1960s:
-Political leaders getting assassinated regularly
-Massive, deadly riots in cities across the country
-Thousands of soldiers dying in a faraway war, enormous often violent anti-war protests at home
-Enormous social upheaval (Civil Rights movement/legislation, feminism, gay rights)
What compares in 2019?

Alright, I see you're a political science major at Colgate, so I'll school you real quick.
The American economy was on fire in the 1960s. It was mostly a white, Christian country. The "strife" of the civil rights movement was unnoticed in 95 percent of America outside notable incidents of riots, most of which lasted a few days. The American middle class was gaining steam, we had manufacturing jobs and factories, our only real geopolitical rival was the Soviet Union, whom was beginning to show cracks already. America was galvanized and making history in space, culminating in the moon landing, defeating the Soviet Union in the space race. Media was focused around three channels and tens of millions of Americans consumed all the same content and tuned into the same shows. The culture was innovative, dynamic and unified. The Vietnam War protests were more symptomatic of a generation gap than anything else, as young people were protesting being sent to die in a foreign war.
Fastforward to today. Our young are sent to die in foreign "conflicts" which are mainly proxy wars between the remaining global powers with little protest or fanfare. The internet and media has fractured into endless streaming and niche platforms, basically putting most people into their own biased echo chambers or into utter mindless escapism. The American middle class is fading rapidly as their mobility has effectively been entirely halted or reversed. Wages are stagnant. Our factories have been gutted and our low unemployment rate doesn't account for the fact that most jobs pay terribly and many people need to work more than one to make ends meet. The situation for the working class is even more dire, as their opioid deaths and sheer hopelessness has actually begun to lower American life expectancy for the first time in decades. They are having difficulty accessing or maintaining the basic accoutrements of normal life (healthcare, housing, jobs) and are spiraling into ever worse straits. Rural towns can't even keep grocery stores open as they die on the vine. Our "media" also launches 24-7 biased attacks against the current president with absolutely no regard for objectivity anymore, leading to further social polarization. Americans are just as balkanized by ideology as they are by wealth or race and this is only becoming more prominent. America has gone from 90 percent white to less than 60 percent white and ethnic and racial strife has only become worse. "White people" and "white supremacy" have become the topics du jour of the Democratic party, further alienating working class whites who feel they have no political home anymore.
"society", or what is left of it, is in far worse shape today than ever before. It is more polarized, alienated and facing more threats from domestic and abroad than in any time in recent memory. It's more akin to the build up to world war one - prior to that a rot was going on but it just needed an igniting switch (in this case, the assassination of the duke), where American society has been degraded to a point where a spectacular collapse could be imminent, with only someone needing to set something off.

As long as the fed. government continues to give out free money & stuff (SSN, disability, medicaid, SNAP, etc.), as well as directly or indirectly employ some obscene percentage of the population, I agree that nobody is doing shit. People can get pissed all they want but the gov. subsidizes so much.
Sovereign debt crisis hits and the feds can't borrow 1T per year anymore and things get interesting.
EDIT: you think Bobby Birdshit isn't doing shit because he's doped up on opioids sitting at home, wait until until his medicaid doesn't pay for them anymore and he can't cash his disability check.

it was a turbulent time- civil rights movement (probably more intense in terms of protests and national debate than any SJW movement today), JFK getting whacked, cold war, vietnam war.
society just wasn't as fractured or as economically decimated as it is today so they just withstood all that stuff well.

the "alt right" has the tendency to view everything as racial and ethnic, and its not always correct, but here it might be.
As turbulent as the 60s were, the US was still a massively homogenous society, with nearly everyone being european, christian, and from two parent families.
That makes that turbulence feel cartoony and bullshit when we are now dealing with a united nations of diversity crammed into one tight space

"I remember going to Seattle in 1971 and seeing a billboard that said, "Will the last person to leave Seattle please turn out the lights." If you signed a 6 month lease there you could get a free color TV at some big apt. complexes (an expensive item in 1971 - equal to more than one month's rent). "
Thanks for reminding me we literally need to gas all boomers.

Violence in the streets was much worse.
The national guard was deployed into cities regularly throughout the 60s and 70s and the riots were much more frequent and consequential. Lol at one half ass looting in FERGUSON, MO comparing.
Also much more cell terrorist activity all over the place. Can't think of any time someone has bombed a police station or military installation over past decade. Closest thing was Dallas and that was lone bullshit
Western Europe was also in a period of chaos.

the only thing that matters is whether people are hungry or not
this is why BIGFOOD is the most powerful force in America and will never be displaced while the government has even the slightest bit of power
