It's not like 30-39 year olds are that much different obesity/fitness wise or that they're all that much less likely to use smartphones or social media. Their sexless rate was climbing after 2008 like the 18-30 yr old group but had a steep drop a couple of years ago so that it's now about where it's been in the past. It's a lot harder now to get your shit together in your 20's (decent job, own housing) so the people in that cohort (especially dudes, who've been hit harder in recent years) are having less sex. Since then childhood obesity has basically held constant at 20%, see the 2016 number:

So the 2018 cohort of 18-30 year olds had mostly fatties from the 2008 under 18 population v the 2008 cohort who had less fats from earlier years. Stipulating of course that childhood obesity is an extremely reliable predictor of adult obesity (something like 80%). Also the first link shows that the mix of fatness was more front loaded, so while the obesity may have been more evenly distributed by 2016 it was a lot of near-adult fatsos making up that 2008 20%. And actually the most recent data shows some improvement with younger ages so the millennials that graduated high school during Obama’s POTUSy have a shot to be the fattest generation ever. See also the recent steady rise in adult obesity that’s now outpacing childhood obesity. |
