If the Taliban or ISIS had had the ability to take him out, they wouldn't have hesitated to do so for a second
In a hypothetical world, where there was credible evidence that Petraeus was organizing an attack on Iran, I don't think Iran would hesitate for a second to take him out either
Assuming the evidence that this guy was coordinating attacks on the Embassy is credible...
I don't know that that is credible, but I haven't actually seen that challenged, more just 'he's their #2!!! Omg!'
If this guys on the ground in Iraq, planning/carrying out operations against the US, I'm not sure what his level of rank in Iran changes about the degree to which he's fair game |

Apparently Iran thinks they can advance their interests with (presumably?) limited action in bumrushing the US Embassy in Iraq (idk, maybe that's a bad presumption)
Maybe we shouldn't have an Embassy in Iraq, but that's really besides the point
A US President's duty to protect Americans extends to Americans in Embassies
A US President should be given wide latitude to figure out what deterrence disincentivizes actors from thinking it advances their interests to threaten our Embassies
(whether that President is Trump, Obama, or anyone else, really doesn't have that much to do with it)

I'm also not prepared to take Pompeo and Trump's word on the 'credible threat' of attacks against the US being imminently planned by this guy, would like to see them actually provide details on this. Trump has rightfully pushed the narrative that we should question the motivation and information of the intelligence community and I think this applies here as much as anywhere else. |
