Contrast that with Conan Obrien, whose TV show gets about a million viewers. Conan makes $12 million a year and has an enormous staff of writers and producers. You could argue TV commercials are more valuable, but they can't be that much more valuable (and I'd argue that podcast listeners are actually more engaged).
So to me, it seems pretty clear that podcast ads are probably undervalued given that all of the Ringers podcasts combine create considerably less revenue than Conan on TBS. |

At the high end that would be more expensive than primetime TV and significantly higher than other podcasts
My argument is podcast CPMs are artificially high due to all these VC backed companies plowing money into ads for popular podcasts. It's not so much an indictment on Simmons and the Ringer, more the general podcast ecosystem
The counterargument, as you alluded to, is that maybe podcast listeners are worth 10x that of radio listeners or more than primetime tv commercial viewers. I'm skeptical of that because if you had that type of arbitrage you'd have big brands flooding to advertise in podcasts. Why would Ford be blowing money on dumb Tv ads if podcast ads convert more efficiently? Instead, like I said, its the same VC backed money pit companies spamming ads

So now the "union rep" bloggers keep saying that they are demanding more info on the sale (because they're too dumb to understand NDAs) when the likely outcome is that Spotify buys the very profitable podcast arm and then all the writers are shit canned and the website is turned off.
Goes to show how dumb these internet journalists are. I get that they want wages and benefits but they aren't really cognizant of the fact that Bill Simmons is the traffic driver and subsidizer of their work, and there's nothing stopping Simmons from shutting down the site and just keeping the $10 mm for himself. Even Joe Rogan commented that it's insane how many people Simmons is employing when he could just be doing a podcast.
So I'm sure if this happened a year ago Simmons would've either said no to protect his staff, or would've insisted the site stay in operations. My gut is now that he says "fuck 'em" since they felt the need to treat him as management instead of a friend. |
