It's not so much that he dislikes Nadal -- because I hate Djokovic -- it's that his worldview on different things in tennis revolves around whether that thing is helpful or harmful to Nadal.
Clay of course is denigrated, but the Aussie Open and the WTF are propped up over RG and the USO solely because Nadal has had less success there. And he pretends as though had Nadal won 1 USO and 4 AO titles that he wouldn't be taking the opposite line of argument, that the USO is more historically prestigious, it's the last major so everyone is geared up, it follows the US hardcourt swing so everyone is tuned up, etc. Meanwhile I am the opposite: Agassi is my favorite athlete of all time and i LOATHE Sampras, but I rightly acknowledge that the USO is more prestigious and I'd switch Agassi to 4 USO and 2 AO (and Pete to 5 AO and 2 USO) any day of the week, even though my opinion hurts Agassi's standing among the tennis greats.
He will argue for things like "defending titles off clay" solely because it impacts Nadal, when defending titles on clay (another player's weakest surface) is ignored.
It's sad too because the tennis content and analysis on here is great; it's just that certain poasters take rooting against a player one step further and use it to color how they analyze every fact, matter or circumstance in tennis. It really does a disservice to the tennis content on xo and I wish it would stop. |
