The fact that NYC's two major airports, JFK and LaGuardia, are there doesn't help. Neither does the fact that it is literally the most diverse county in the entire world (meaningful representation from 100+ countries, 140+ languages spoken), with a lot of Asian enclaves, e.g. Flushing.

Here is a normal day in Flushing (this is ~20 min. from Manhattan by subway), which may illuminate the above point:

It's probably the single biggest factor. Constant exposure = high as fuck viral load. That's why cruise ships, nursing homes and hospitals get pwnt. Just standing behind a sick person at the supermarket won't do shit, you have to be swimming in a virus SOUP

Cruise ships had very low mortality which actually I think tends to confirm your hypo. A droplet spec in your food or in an air vent is low viral load.

Author: invoke the "p"

worst case statistics:

20% need testing due to serious symptoms so total cases roughly 100K

so 4% hospitalization rate and 1% ICU rate

in line with expectations. this is the upper bound

if stanford analysis is true then total infected cases is roughly 1M with roughly 600 dead (we would have missed covid deaths in late jan, early feb as they would not have been tested so assume covid deaths = 2*300). so 0.06% CFR

with functioning healthcare system that is not overloaded

0.05% < CFR < 1%

until we have more data from randomized antibody testing this is the range

Then there is the issue of who will run the new devices. Dr. Mahshid Abir, an emergency physician at University of Michigan, said most ventilators require specialized training to operate. With so many health care workers falling ill, there is an additional staffing challenge: patients tethered to breathing machines need to be monitored 24 hours a day. The New England Journal of Medicine estimates that there are only enough respiratory therapists to care for 100,000 patients at one time.
