But almost everyone can become successful and financially well off if they practice their people/sales skills and take some risks in life. When I quit my job with Harrison Barnes to start my own firm it was a huge risk. We just closed on a house, my wife's salary couldn't cover all our bills, and I was giving up a good salary that had profit sharing. I was super nervous and had anxiety about failure the first few months.
It is likely you fail many times but every single self made successful person I've ever met has had failures. I've done plenty of things where I fell flat on my face. But I keep getting up and pushing myself. People are taught in school to get a good job and work for others. Then they flip out when they lose their jobs and the people who took all the risk make tons of cash. |

My point was really that it is your skills/personality/drive that dictate success. You don't have to believe me, but I would have made a lot of money doing lots of things: real estate, sales, medicine, etc. Maybe law was one of the more profitable options, but there are certainly skills that make people successful doing almost anything. I think I have those skills and I think people can learn those skills (maybe some are naturally better but everyone can get them to some extent). It's like being in great shape. Some people have a natural tendency to look great with minimal effort, but even most people with bad genetics can get ripped if they put in the time and effort.
I don't think I am overstating my success. My NW is probably 0.5% for my age cohort and my income is like 0.001% for all people in the US.
As much as I, admittedly, have fun braging on XO. I have take personal enjoyment in helping people succeed and discover the same thing I have about success. Anyone who has talked to me on the phone about their practice can 100% attest to the fact that I genuinely enjoy helping people and ask for nothing in return.

And I also want to point out that you and I have very similar career paths. I have been posting here since well before you (2004) when I first was considered law school. I scored a 170 and visited UCLA law and one day there convinced me to never do law. I spent the next few years figuring out my life and finishing up pre med courses, and was mocked mercilessly on here as being a loser and living in a basement, all by lawyers with political science degrees who thought they were entitled to 150-250k+ a year to correct comma splices for Boomers. Now 99.9% of them are out of biglaw, burnt out, and unemployed or barely employable as inhouse lawyers now, while I am making over 600k a year and will continue to do so. These are the same jealous people convinced I was shut out of every US med school and self deported here; meanwhile I am in the best country in the world while US doctors can barely make a living now.
But the difference is I don't go around telling everyone how incredibly intelligent and powerful I am. I don't go around telling people I am better than them because I have a wife and a kid. You know all your shit is self aggrandising behaviours and that your out for yourself, just like all of us. Just know that arrogance can and will lead to you're donwfall, brother. |

it's not so much an issue of self-improvement, since i actually think a lot of people on this bort are very focused on improving their situation. rather, it goes to where the effort is directed.
if you're an already appellate masterman, for example, there's only so much you can gain by getting better at writing briefs, whereas you'd get a ton of yield out of improving your ability to pitch sales and market, etc. |

We just didn't have the time or desire to go out there to market. - I sold porn in 5th grade and got caught by the principal and suspended from school - I opened a second firm with a friend from high school and his wife outside of my firm's area. I was 50% and they were 50%. He was upset I got 50% by doing no work and I ended up selling him my share of the firm for a couple hundred grand. I was bringing in nearly 100% of the files and they didn't realize how valuable that was. Their firm appears to has stagnated since and it doesn't appear to me that they are doing well. |
