You can argue that's because Biden defiantly won SC, but he was always slated to AND had got last minute, key endorsements from establishment Dems like Jim Clyburn (there was a poll saying a huge % of SC primary voters based their decision on his endorsement).
The DNC collusion was even more out in the open than last time, when it was mainly DNC covertly working with Hillary to give her the edge. |

The "moderate" and "establishment" and "dejected former suburban Republican" camps were all divided between Biden and Buttigieg, Klobuchar, etc. Once they all dropped out and endorsed Biden, Biden was able to consolidate those factions in a way that wouldn't be possible if there was more time for Bernie (or Team Trump) to exploit differences between them. It all unfolded like days before Super Tuesday, enabling Biden to seal up huge delegate margins without much scrutiny.
Equivalent would've been all but one non-Trump candidate dropping out in the 2016 primary days before Super Tuesday, giving Trump too little time to start landing a forceful line of attack to divide that newly welded bunch of factions - to, say, point out how Jeb wouldn't be good on social issues for Evangelicals or how Marco would be soft on immigration to anti-immigration crowd, etc. - and then that guy winning.
