Juneteenth is another example of this -- it's going to be pushed into being a holiday and some big part of black identity, but really it's just a celebration of whites first bringing blacks here against their will, and then giving them their freedom (largely for the benefit of the Union and the destruction of the South, not the benefit of the blacks) -- negative identity.
This episode is now a huge part of his identity, which is really just him being the black guy in a white southern sport. He pretty much has to go with it, because without it he's just a middling also ran. |
