It should be. I think a nice compromise would be 1 House rep to DC and 1 extra house rep to Wyoming, the most GOP state. No Senators.
Or have DC be represented by Maryland.
More people live in DC than Wyoming and Vermont.

?
"Mr. President, where the nation should be treated to a consideration of constitutional philosophy, all it will get in such circumstances is a partisan bickering and political posturing from both parties and from both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. As a result, it is my view that if a Supreme Court Justice resigns tomorrow, or within the next several weeks, or resigns at the end of the summer, President Bush should consider following the practice of a majority of his predecessors and not — and not — name a nominee until after the November election is completed."

DC was purposefully invented as a not-state, the founders explicitly wanted the seat of government not to be a state. Maryland and VA ceded land specifically for this purpose
has everyone gone crazy

One of the most important books I've ever read was, of all things, a history of women in New england from 1650-1750. It's a good book, well written, but it was mostly interesting because it relied heavily on primary sources and quoted them extensively.
I was repeatedly struck by how *foreign* everything sounded. They were very clearly artifacts from a different culture, completely unlike the one I grew up in. We're taught this history that the NE colonies are the birthplace of the United States and gave the US its basic guiding principles. But if you read the book this just isn't true, at all; the basic principles they lived by are completely alien to us. That really was another country, and the idea of a continuous coherent entity called "America" is just not true.

I'd recommend reading The Radicalism of the American Revolution by Gordon Wood.
https://www.amazon.com/Radicalism-American-Revolution-Gordon-Wood-ebook/dp/B004HFRJT4
It's probably the most remarkable and insightful book on the radical changes that occurred in America from pre to post-Revolutionary days. In short, 2020 America has more in common to 1790 America than 1790 America does to 1750 America.
It's also a direct rejection to your claim that the idea of a coherent entity called America is just not true. There were strong principles established by the Revolution and which manifested itself in ways that not even the Founding Fathers expected but which have become so ingrained in the American psyche that we don't question it at all - to this day. One of the unintended byproducts of the revolution was the unleashing of the periodic mass movements to rebuild America in the name of an utopian, pure, vision. Today's mass protests and PC movements have its parallels in the Puritans of New England, the evangelical revivals, the Temperance movement.
Have there been major cultural changes in the past 200 years? Sure, but so many of the principles we take for granted today were established by the Revolution and the first generation of Americans after the Revolution.

there are plenty of Republicans that live in DC, particularly during a Republican administration.
most of them vote elsewhere. Trump himself votes by mail in either FL or NY wherever he feels like it.
Tucker lives in DC but votes Dem.

Obvious solution is to give it to MD
Otherwise let's divide Alaska 5 ways for 8 new GOP senators

Because it has the elements of a city and is a city, not a state. Might as well make every city above 500k it's very own state if DC becomes a state
But get a moniker Paulie

you made a hyperbolic strawman and are now trying to moderate discussion.
in other words, you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.
your non sequitur about cities above 500k is irrelevant because other than San Juan, PR each of those American cities has Congressional representation for the residents that live there by way of the state(s) that those cities lie within

You seem really butthurt, a common reaction among the hyperpolitical posters. Try to calm down and reason through this.
DC wants representation. I agree, DC should have representation by making it a part of MD, because it is a city that should be a part of a state.
But no this is not enough. This is not a solution say the liberals. Why not? This gives DC representation, but they never really wanted that. Libs just want two new senators, that's all, and they'll go about it in a nonsensical way of creating a city state when DC could simply become part of MD.

...because they would be part of the state of Maryland.
The same way that I pay taxes to the state governing body to pave streets that I've never been to hundreds of miles away from me.
If that's your objection then your problem is that the jurisdictional division of america is by state, an alternative to which I suppose could interesting if you're starting america from scratch but not relevant.

Not at all, but perhaps put up the mirror every now and then when you're accusing others of political expediency.
What I propose would give DC residents representation and actually preserve, mostly, the current balance. It goes out of its way to actually avoid gaining political advantage for either the democrats or the republicans.
What your proposing is politically expedient and concerned mostly with just getting a edge in one of the congresional bodies, while of course denying it.
America could organize itself by city state on a national scale, but claiming that right just for DC, in a hotly contested senate, is blatantly politically driven.

It should be folded into MD or VA. If they admit DC and PR as states then you’ll see an endless gaming of the system to increasingly add more states.
I saw an article on the game theory of this and author concluded that this was inevitable and best strategy was to strike first and hard. Yikes.
