I don't. I kind of like making my own food and not depending on these shit establishments that charge 3x as much for meals.

True, there are some restaurant experiences that are truly exceptional.

I hardly ever had those experiences though. Like, maybe once every 2 years.

Even going for lunch, I would go to a shitty places and it always sucked.

But yes, if everything is done very well, a sit down restaurant can be a good experience that cannot be replicated at home.

Chinese is high on my list, I can't make that stuff taste like it does from a restaurant for the life of me.

I used to cook dinner for myself nearly every night, but going out now and then was nice. I miss having the option. I also do not miss bars, though.

It really forces you to think about how much of the dining out experience is pure garbage. Oh great another burger, fries, and milkshake place...do we really need to pay $27 per person for this or should we just go home and make a meal for $6.

The other thing about this too is that while a burger can be very tasty, it's not the kind of thing you should be eating all the time. I mean, there's healthier choices that are maybe easier to make and then if you go 2 weeks before burgers, maybe you enjoy your burger more?

I don't know. Just a thought.

Burgers also benefit massively from a little extra effort, which your average burger place is not putting in. I like to add breadcrumbs, soy sauce, ginger powder, and some sriracha. It's one fucking eighty. I can't imagine paying $20 for a burger at some random pub. By contrast, I just cannot make Thai or Chinese on my own, and while I've done dumplings, the time just isn't worth the effort compared to getting them from a place that's preparing in bulk.

I've made homemade french fries but it's too much of a pain in the ass compared to just buying some frozen waffle fries. Tossing some potato wedges in the oven with some olive oil is pretty awesome, though.

I was wondering how much the takeout culture is going to kill these brunching spots. It is hard to replicate fine dining or a steakhouse, but to me it is becoming noticeable that when I eat a chicken sandwich at home from an artisinal bistro and one from Arbys, the Arbys one tastes better and is 1/3 the price.

I miss going to bars.

There's a big patio bar near me that I go to all the time now. Its basically outside.

I went to a normal bar two weekends ago that was inside and it really was kind of weird being around that many people. I left to get on the patio

Okay. For you and people like you, here is my question:

Do you think you were going to bars too much before?

Do you want to return to going out to bars at the same frequency as you did before this pandemic?

Has the experience of the shutdowns encouraged you to rethink some of your experience consumption?

1. I don't think I was going to bars too much before. Usually I was going twice a weekend, sometimes once a weekend but I was doing something with friends the other night, and not really going out much during the week. Although I did have the occasional Wednesday or Thursday night drink out. But especially fridays, the last thing I wanted to do after a long week at work was to stay home.

2. Since my frequency wasn't particularly high before compared to most social people, I doubt my frequency will change much after this. Or maybe it will a little since I live in walking distance of a few bars now where before I had to uber all the time

3. The only thing I thought about was that I hate drinking alone at home. I wasn't getting blackout drunk on the nights that I went out before either.

I will admit that it is nice to be able to wake up on a saturday and not feel groggy and have major beer shits, and then be able to go on a run or something before lunch. But when this happens, I inevitably will start drinking early in the day after I do a run.

A lot of times it Is easier to make a meal for yourself than all of the bullshit of getting dressed, going out, sitting down, ordering, waiting, eating, coming home. Meal can be made, dishes washed, and you’re back to billing hours in 1/3 the time/effort as pre-pandemic.

bro i just roll out to restaurants w/ full biker beard, in basketball shorts, a sleeveless shirt and a flat-brimmed hat. no one gives a fuck anymore. literally takes no preparation to go to a mid-range or lower restaurant, and you don't even have to drive that far if you're in a downtown area.

as for waiting, i'll just talk to my friend(s)/gf and if i'm alone i'll order ahead and if i MUST wait by myself i'll just crush it on duolingo bro.

I go to restaurants fairly often because I have a lot of friends in that industry. I went last night to the place I met that girl last week, but she wasn't working and her friend seemed pissed at me. Not sure what happened.

i went to dinner with my wife for the first time since lockdowns started last weekend. we spent $90 bucks on a beer, a glass of wine, 2 appetizers and a pasta dish. it felt like someone had robbed me when i paid the bill. dining out sucks. bars are ok for catching sports games with friends

Exactly. The last time I went to a restaurant for a meal it was over $100 for two drinks, an appetizer, and an entree. It’s insane.

from what I understand sushi is easy to make once you have the ingredients but who wants to assemble the ingredients?

Flame. There’s no longer enough traffic on xo to make it worthwhile to sit and mega poast with a drink at a hotel bar.

But I get your point. It was business trips that really got me started drinking everyday. I have since cut back. But being done for the day, geographically stranded, and being tired. That lead to drinking at the hotel bar. And when you were somewhere shitty like a Courtyard Marriott in Clarksville, Indiana, picking up 3 bottles of Heineken at the pseudo store and taking them up to your room.

There are also some restaurant dishes that are pretty difficult to scale down for one if you try to make it myself. If I want a seafood quesadilla, for example, it's kind of difficult to buy the right amount at the store, so a lot of the base ingredients go to waste and it costs me about the same amount.

I'm a once a week regular at a shitty bar with cheap beer and good wings. I miss that. A nice cocktail before or after a good meal is enjoyable. I can make my own steak or roast a chicken no sweat but as others have said there is some fancy or ethnic food that's not really practical to make at home.

So yeah, I miss it, but I suspect we'd eat out maybe half a often as before if virus disappeared tomorrow.

Most restaurants are probably perma-fucked unless they have some angle they take or something special like live music. Half the restaurants in downtown Minneapolis are never re-opening.

Same in MFH, though if that means millennials will need to learn to cook basic stuff, it's not the worst thing in the world. I get going out for fresh-made pasta, high-quality sushi, or cheap Chinese/Thai that's hard to make at home, then fine, but "brunch" is the dumbest invention ever. You can make an omelette for like a dollar.

"Cloud kitchen" is the term they're trying to forcememe for a restaurant that doesn't actually have a dine-in location but instead is just a place where you order from on Seamless.

The concept is to have a large kitchen that numerous restaurants can rent space from. So you could have 10 restaurants sharing the space and all of them are delivery only.
