It's also useful for transporting large purchases (big TVs, etc.).

IMO a used Lexus GS is the GOAT 'don't know what car I want' car
- The rear wheel drive (or optional all wheel drive) is sportier than the front wheel drive ES
- They are nice enough inside where you and anyone riding with you will think 'yo, this is a nice car'. People never think that with Camrys.
- Very reliable, it's a Toyota.
- Someone else ate a bunch of the luxury depreciation

I think the marginal difference between say, an X6 50i and a 5 series 550i is non-existent as far as I'm concerned. Yes, the latter is slightly faster or whatever, but I value the ability to save my ass in flooding, deep snow, some horrible dirt road more than I value the tiny improvements. So I always get the performance SUV version.

Not really. What exactly does that extra performance get you? People on XO already think I'm insane for hitting 130 mph on roads. What would a slightly faster car get me?

You *are* insane for going that fast on public roads.
Also it's not about sheer speed, at some point handling starts to come into play and that's where SUVs are faggot if you don't *really* need one.
Furthermore, this thread isn't about you.

2 reasons: 1. the budget, and 2. it is just him and his gf and I haven't seen him considering a larger car/SUV for any particular reason. For example, we have always done that but we have had large dogs, did long road trips, etc.
But he could easily get an m40i: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZZoHlT_MpE
If he shopped around an x3m may be possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05RTOCV74Yo
Since he lives in Chicago, a compact SUV is easier to park, cheaper on gas, etc. so unless there's a reason to go bigger I'm not sure why he would bother.
Porsche Macan Turbo may also be in the running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ9TAlf6y8Q

"dude used 2019 x5's are like $40k what are u talking about"
That's base model bullshit. Why would you ever get a large, slow BMW as a guy that is dating and with no kids?
"also u should never buy new even if u can afford it, just take the extra 40% and get a better version of a CPO which has 170 point inspection"
It isn't "an extra 40% off". And I say this as someone that did buy a slightly used BMW CPO.

even if it's not 40% and it's 20%, no one should pay 20% more for the same car with 10k miles on it.
check out all the youtube videos with car experts and new car dealership owners. they all say that if u have time, u should buy used. if u want to just get it over with, then sure u can overpay by 20-40% and not bother doing any work.

A lot of those guys are advocating that you have a mechanic that you know and buy private party and in the right circumstances can win big. They don't mean going to the same BMW or Toyota dealer and buying slightly used and somehow you'll win huge. You might save some or you might not.

Reread. Nowhere did I claim that. I said for private party non-CPO you should have that. You're referencing typical Scotty Kilmer Youtube type advice.

With a 60k budget in Chicago you should get an SUV or AWD Sedan.
Don’t buy new. Buy CPO or 2-5 years old with less than 20k miles. If you’re getting a German car buy the extended warranty.
For SUVs you should target land cruisers, Audi SQ 5 (sportier) or Q 5/7, BMW x 5/7, Mercedes GLE or GLS. Land Rovers (especially sport) and Porsche’s are available but I’m not a fan of either offering (LRs will be a pain in the ass and Porsche SUV styling isn’t my thing).
If you want a sedan you can find anything from a sporty m5 to an S 6/7, or a S class / 7 series if you like the boomer boat thing.

just remember NEVER BUY NEW
with used cars nowadays they're like 10-20k miles, they last 200k miles, and are 30%+ below new prices so u get huge value and literally the same brand new car
never buying new again, even if u can afford it, because it allows u to go from a shitty new bmw 3 series to like a used BMW M3 sports car.

This is advice that was more true a decade or two ago than now. The thing is that so many people shop used first that you no longer get the crazy discounts because "someone drove it off the lot." CPO programs have helped reduce this impact too. Especially since a bunch of places also heavily discount new cars too. Just look for last year's model on closeout, for example.

BMWs are incredibly expensive to fix out of warranty. Take that into consideration. Also, many times you can get a good discount on new/last year's model.

I used cars.com, but same game. Lately new have been discounted more heavily too though. The other thing is that they tend to give really good financing on new whereas CPO doesn't get that. Didn't matter to me since I paid all cash but the concept that it is ALWAYS better to do X or Y is usually false. Especially if we switched to talking about Toyotas and such, where used barely gives any discount at all.

maybe ur getting a sweetheart deal but i approached a couple new car dealerships around my area and they're all offering cheap financing plans but not great deals
had one guy explain it to me, a franchised bmw dealership can't discount by much more than their invoice price. they only make $500 per unit at that point. they can only make $ on the financing. the are owned by the OEMs and can't give u $5k off just because they want to close a deal. the used guys however, can do so because they are not connected to an OEM like bmw which is a public company and can't just give away cars for free. if u need financing, maybe go with new, but for anyone who has time to research and can pay mostly cash, they should go 1-3 year used 99% of the time.

They run 0%-0.9% financing periodically.

$5k off LISTING. you aren't reading. no one cares about MSRP. give me the phone # of a nearby NYC/NJ/CT dealership selling a BMW X5 for $5k off their invoice price (where they break even) and i'll call them and edit all my posts ITT to

I spent months looking for a really great deal (car had to have the specs/features that I wanted for a great price) so obviously I'm not going to invest that time for you. But I recall there were some BMW forums that do group buying and don't be afraid to search nationally and have the car shipped to you (or just fly in and drive it back yourself).

No, I shipped it from around Chicago to NJ. It cost like $600 and I got it a few days later. But a lot of deals are in Texas or Florida or other places. Another good deal I found was around Atlanta. Search nationwide. If you're shipping from California you'll pay like $1500-$2k or whatever, just factor that into your calculations. Assume $1/mile for shipping.
Years ago when I bought a Jaguar I used miles to fly into Florida. Picked up my car and drove it home.
But there's no reason in this game to limit it to 500 miles.

Keep in mind, I bought it for like $17k barely used (and under warranty) and for the time it was pretty fast and had every feature (everything was wrapped in this luxurious leather, the shift knob was this honed wood, etc.). It was British racing green and beige interior. I had a ton of fun in that car. Remarkably, people acted like I had an unbelievably expensive car. Also - I was an undergrad student at the time and also drove it through law school. Kept it until I left for Russia and handed it down to family which subsequently drove it into the ground. Definitely got my money's worth.

don't think u can generalize
see above with TMF, i contacted a few new dealerships and it's been the opposite. they offer great financing but refuse to take the $ price down, they show me invoice and it's not like new dealerships make great $ per unit. they actually lose money on most cases and get paid back by the OEM (bmw in this case which is a public company).
the used guys have no loyalty to a brand and they are allowed to sell a car for $3-$5k below because their other option is to send it to wholesale auction for other dealerships to bid on.

Bro, you know that's just a sales tactic right? "Invoice" is *never* what the dealer is actually paying for a car. You think they are actually just going to fucking show you what their actual profit is on a transaction? Are you a moron?
The used car game has gotten much more cutthroat in recent years. They absolutely don't have $3-5k to give off of list unless you're talking about very expensive cars that sit around for a long time. You'll *never* get $3k off of list on a used Camry

"i've been talking to new and used dealerships for a while"
They are literally the exact same dealerships. That's what is so weird about this position. I bought my CPO BMW from a normal BMW dealership that could have sold me the exact same car new. Also, if you want CPO you're pretty much limited to normal BMW dealerships. Bobby's Used Cars and Trucks can't CPO a BMW.

You should probably get a Tesla dude. Other than that, two "value" options that I think you'd appreciate. I will probably cop one of these two options soon:
1. 2018+ Honda Accords are a great car imo. I'd say even nicer than the baseline Acura or Lexus models. Car will last forever with minimal repair costs, while maintaining value. I'd probably cop a Sport or Touring model slightly pre owned (less than 30k miles). You're rich enough to just buy new
https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/812265817/overview/
https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/805712700/overview/
2. Lexus IS 200t
Again, low maintenance costs because its basically a Toyota, but nicer exterior and the lexus badge. The interior is the only downside of this car, but otherwise, pretty nice, affordable, and gets you in a "luxury" car that won't cost an arm and leg to maintain.

It isn't "never", I definitely use the capabilities. But if you change it to "but you don't need it *most* of the time" then you're right. It is just about how much someone values that "some of the time". For me it is a requirement, for others maybe not.

great car but HORRENDOUS for road trips. the battery range is actually 85% of advertised.
then u spend ur last 50 miles on road trips trying to find the next battery so usually u detour for 20 miles trying to charge. then it takes 1-2 hours to charge.
then u are back on the road. it elongates a 10 hour road trip into 2x as long. that's also assuming warm weather. the tesla batteries crash in cold weather, especially if u don't want to freeze while u drive cause u'll be blasting the heat too.
other than that it's a great vehicle

If you want to see what turbo goy used car cucks are advocating, go down to your nearest Budget location and ask for a base model Nissan with 20k miles on it. Yes this would be much cheaper than a new car - because it is a piece of shit.
The dream in used car buying is to buy from a little old lady who didn’t drive much, parked in garage, paid for all maintenance, had no accidents and then stopped driving or traded in. Everyone wants the same car and dealers hold the line on pricing. The cheap cars will have accidents, too many miles, bad maintenance. You can sink months into searching to save a modest amount (which disappears after you factor in travel, value of time). Or you can figure out what you want and pay the low end of market for it rather than wasting your time so that you can lie to strangers on the internet about how good of a deal you got.
That screed aside, if you own no car today, don’t know how to drive, don’t know what you want or why, and will be using car in city, I would not jump right into a new luxury vehicle. If you get a used Honda or equivalent you can beat the shit out of it for a few years and then upgrade and sell to some idiot kid once you have a suburban garage and more knowledge. Urbanites our age are basically teenagers with respect to cars - if it has four wheels and goes when you hit the gas, the novelty will be exciting even if it is a junker objectively. More power and a perfect appearance are really sources of risk rather than clear benefits at this stage. Also to back to where I started - you can rent a car quite often before you hit total cost of ownership, so consider renting various types until you figure out whether you need a car and if so what you like.
