"Can’t imagine this guy wouldn’t have been promoted below the zone."

What does this mean?

I just meant that xo would have a hard on for a guy who majored in Greek at Harvard, learned 7 langauges, then became a SEAL.

Very few people getting promoted BTZ these days, particularly in the Navy. Also his CV, while impressive, isn't all that hot shit when compared to dozens of other specops officers.

Right. He's NROTC. They don't even do that shit at Harvard. You have to go over to MIT for that.

Guys from the Academy don't often hit O-6 in 21 years.

22 years is considered ITZ nowadays, most BTZ promotions to O-6 are at 20 or 21 years. The Air Force was big on promoting people to O-6 as early as year 19 a while back, but that trend has slowed down significantly.

True, but his Harvard degree and knowledge of Arabic and Ancient Greek mean jack shit to a promotion board. A guy with a GED who has stellar fitreps will get promoted before a Harvard grad with a PhD with only average evaluations every single time.

I can't comment on the guy's military career, but like I said, it's the combination of his academic background and SEAL that I thought would be fodder for xo. I doubt the people here would be significantly more impressed if he's an admiral or whatever instead of commander. We've all seen unimpressive careerists at high levels in the corporate world, and I imagine the military isn't immune from them, either.

"We've all seen unimpressive careerists at high levels in the corporate world, and I imagine the military isn't immune from them, either."

Man oh man you'd be shocked at how similar the military and corporate worlds are at the top levels. The military promotion system is geared towards rewarding "box-checking" and politicking with superiors/towing the company line to get the coveted #1 OER or FITREP. Rocking the boat, deviating from the well-worn traditional path, and generally thinking "outside the box" does not lend itself to rapid promotion in the armed services.

This is pretty spot on. You don't make General/Admiral without being political as fuck.

You can make Colonel/Navy Captain on occasion without being a political animal. But that is fairly rare in the US military.

Promotion up to O-5 is pretty straightforward. If you have a pulse, do your job, don't fuck the COs wife and manage to avoid getting a DUI, you will make O-5 and be able to retire at 20. O-6 is the first rank where politics really comes into play, and there is a higher degree of "subjectivity" in the promotion process (i.e. politics). Making flag is pretty much all about politics and nobody pins on their first star without having serious support at the 3/4 star level.

Pentagon tours are almost non-existent at the O-3 level. Yes, they do exist, but they are not considered career enhancing and generally go to officers in branches and career fields that aren't considered critical.

I mean, there are plenty of random HQ billets for the various services that are considered "Pentagon" tours, but they are generally not considered career-enhancing at that level. There are no Joint Staff billets at the O-3 level other than a few Joint Staff "internship" spots. At O-3 you should be focused on becoming tactically proficient in your field, and while headquarters tours can definitely expose you to the strategy side, more value comes from it later in your career after becoming tactically proficient.

I definitely miss parts of it. The wacky and hilarious guys I served with, the small unit camaraderie etc. Ultimately though I couldn't see myself as career, I had other goals in life that really didn't mesh well with a military career. I'm sure I could have made it work, but it would have required additional sacrifices I didn't really want to make. And I also got sick of being told to I had to live in rural Georgia or upstate New York.

Looks like he also doesn't have an operational O-5 command (SEAL/SDV/SWCC Team), although I can't exactly tell because some of his CV is vaguely worded to obscure service with JSOC or some SMU. If that's the case than he isn't making O-6 unless the CNO is his father-in-law or something.

It actually says proficient, which I assume means reading proficiency. There are people who are fluent in Sanskrit, but they tend to be Indians who are spoken Sanskrit revivalists, e.g. https://detechter.com/seven-sanskrit-speaking-villages-in-india/

Westerners learning ancient languages are held to a far lower standard.

Describe your experience during hell week. I go crazy if I stay up a single night. I can't imagine getting 5 hours of sleep over 5 days, plus all that PT. How did you feel when you went from wearing a white shirt to brown?

"The third week with the Draeger is, by consensus of the class, the most difficult in Second Phase."

How does this compare to hell week?

Hell week is a roller coaster. Low points are saying goodbye to the sun each day, the base tour and steel pier. High points were meals, and everything from the around the world boat tour until you secure the next day.

The sleep deprivation is tough. We didn't get our first couple hours of sleep until Tuesday afternoon I think.I slept so hard I didn't wake up when the instructors came back in and a particularly nasty fucker named CARLOS VARGAS picked me up by the front of my blouse and threw me onto the grinder. After that first stretch of sleep people would begin to periodically nod off anytime we weren't moving.

Getting the brownshirt is a big deal at the time you get it. Instructors treat you significantly better after hell week. For me it was the most significant thing I did in the navy since I never got the trident and went on to a pretty mundane signals intelligence job.

I don't remember "dive hell week" being all that bad, it's just really long days. You're doing two tactical dives a day, one in the morning/afternoon and one at night. With prepping all the gear and "dirt diving" the dives in advance you end up getting about 4 hours sleep a night when your days are very demanding. Nice when it's over but doesn't hold a candle to first phase.

Sucks. Lots of stories in the book of guys who get dropped through no fault of their own, e.g. developing infections during training.

Yeah, plenty of guys get medically dropped but they try to give people the benefit of the doubt. If your recovery will take more than 2-3 months you're usually SOL. One of my OICs was a former Force Recon lieutenant who went navy just to be a SEAL. He was a big dude and fractured his hip in hell week but still finished. He was medically rolled two classes which wasn't very common.

Other injuries you were just fucked. Like if guys went down with heat stroke they were usually just done bc of the increased propensity to have heat stroke occur again in the future.

Edit: I guess he was a ranger. It’s been eleven years now. He was good childhood friends with Marcus Luttrell which influenced the decision. Not sure why why he didn’t just go SEAL from the beginning.

Bonus: he’s pictured with Luttrell in Lone Survivor, names Tommy Richardson

ah, interesting. him going ranger --> seal makes a bit more sense to me. anecdotally seals tend to be more similar to rangers in makeup than to force recon or green berets (since the latter tend to be made up of more seasoned NCOs)

It's probably harder than most standard pistol quals across the services. The whole course of fire is done at 25 yards which isn't anything too crazy but is a pretty good distance to be accurate with a pistol. I'm mostly just a fairly shitty shot. I've often wondered if there is something not right with my vision bc although on vision charts I still test better than 20/20 without glasses, when I do the machine version at the DMV I have trouble focusing and it feels like there is some sort of depth issue. It's water long under the bridge now but my life probably would have been a lot more interesting if I'd made it through.

I've never done BUD/S, but I've known/worked with/supported dozens of those who have completed it and their take is that while hell week is built up into this mythical beast to the public, it's mostly about weeding out those who REALLY want to be there, anyone who can pass a pre-BUD/S physical screening can finish it with the right attitude. What people don't understand is that the physical aspect of BUD/S never lets up. So not only are you PTing like a madman and rolling around in the cold surf for a few hours a day, you now have to learn land navigation and combat diving on top of it.

How frequently do you think he uses Sanskrit or Ancient Greek in his day to day? Scholars of these languages who are actually proficient need to constantly use these skills since they are perishable.

Dormant languages come back quickly. I have no problem with people claiming proficiency for languages they can revive in short order. Was curious if he had some other reason than this for doubting the guy's proficiency.

Maybe for languages you learned as a child, when the brain is is still in development mode and those neural pathways become ingrained (I doubt he was studying Sanskrit at age 8). I don't think this is true of languages you've picked up in adulthood, at least in my experience. Plus Latin, Ancient Greek, and to a certain extent Sanskrit aren't spoken anymore, so it's completely different from learning Spanish, French or Mandarin.

The threshold for proficiency for ancient languages at academic institutions is much lower than for modern languages, so it's actually an easier claim to make.

Also, the critical period hypothesis is rather overblown, IMO.
