Man oh man you'd be shocked at how similar the military and corporate worlds are at the top levels. The military promotion system is geared towards rewarding "box-checking" and politicking with superiors/towing the company line to get the coveted #1 OER or FITREP. Rocking the boat, deviating from the well-worn traditional path, and generally thinking "outside the box" does not lend itself to rapid promotion in the armed services. |

If you have a pulse, do your job, don't fuck the COs wife and manage to avoid getting a DUI, you will make O-5 and be able to retire at 20. O-6 is the first rank where politics really comes into play, and there is a higher degree of "subjectivity" in the promotion process (i.e. politics). Making flag is pretty much all about politics and nobody pins on their first star without having serious support at the 3/4 star level. What people don't understand is that the physical aspect of BUD/S never lets up. I don't think this is true of languages you've picked up in adulthood, at least in my experience. Plus Latin, Ancient Greek, and to a certain extent Sanskrit aren't spoken anymore, so it's completely different from learning Spanish, French or Mandarin.
