Forget about storage/operating costs, the cost to buy a boat is unreal, yet they are basically a big hunk of plastic with a motor

aircraft actually have to do something that is unstable and complicated, i.e. stable flight
boats just have to float - that's accomplished pretty easily - styrofoam floats

you can lose both of those in a small cessna and you will gently glide back to earth and be able to land the plane. i know this, because my flight instructor once turned the engine off and intentionally stalled the plane. he turned to me and said "see how its still fully under control and nothing bad is happening? you will not kill yourself in this plane unless you actively do something stupid."

You won't die unless you panic. But it's likely the plane will be totaled unless you butter the bread on a highway and manage to avoid trees/cars/powerlines.
You should be fine if your avionics go out especially if you have a tablet backup running Foreflight. But never underestimate the power of the boomer to freak out

Boats, jet skis, ATVs, motorcycles all have the powergoy price premium. Anything proles call "toys" that they can haul around with their big truck costs way more than it should because these people love to "splurge".
My grandpa owned 4 boats that way at least 1 was sure to be working at any given time

this looks nice! but it's $3800 -- cliffs on why it's worth it, aside from the finishes (which I can see are very nice carbon accents, or cherry wood, etc.)

Weighs 35 pounds and can be fitted with very comfortable carbon fiber kayak seats vs a 90 pound Old Town canoe.
If I had a lake house and was just dragging it right down to the water, these wouldn’t even be a consideration. But I have to transport it to local lakes and rivers from my SUV roof. And I also want to do some tripping that could involve portages (carrying the boat on your back for up to a couple of kilometers).
If you want something in between the two extremes, look at Nova Craft’s canoes.

Answer: boats are produced in very small numbers, some companies only make a few dozen of each models per year. For instance, if you wanted to buy a Parker 2300, there are about 6 new ones for sale right now nationwide.
The materials are expensive but also there is a lot of labor involved in boat manufacturing plus you need a relatively large physical location to do this in. It's difficult and dangerous work. Further, it is skilled labor and people involved in boat building tend to demand real money. There are no mass produced boats and all good boats are basically hand made.
Also, the boat market is very small, not a lot of people can really afford a boat, have access to big water, are inclined to spend this kind of money on a hobby, or have the know-how to operate a real boat.
Compound that with financing companies basically offering the equivalent of mortgages on new boats (15 year note is about standard at this point) at sub 5% rates, financing companies doing this really jacked up the price of boats over the last decade.

ty, educational. I didn't realize so many boat owners had loans against the boat -- not sure why this surprises me as I know car loans are super common -- I guess it seems like lenders wouldn't want to repossess an "underwater boat" (tyty) so they'd charge crazy interest

Boats are terrible investments, but they hold their value pretty well. For instance, a Regulator 23 sells new for about $150k, a 5 year old Regulator 23 sells for about $110k and a 15 year old Regulator 23 sells for $75k.
Again, you're not making money on this, but the boats do keep value to where they're not worthless.

If you're a man who makes money, it seems like the main hobbies that people get into are golf, boats, airplanes, or exotic cars.
Of that, IMHO, golf is the most expensive. Guys drop 15k+ per year to be members of these golf clubs like it's nothing, that is much more expensive per year than, say, a 25 foot sportfisher.
It's all super privileged stuff and good for people who can afford to do this.

country club analogy is stupid. even if you want to join a private club there are far cheaper ones out there than the $15K/yr example. boating has a much higher barrier even to own a shitty boat

Good golf club for less than 15k? Brother in South Carolina it would be hard to find a good club for much less than that and you should look at the prices for decent clubs in Los Angeles.

you're talking out of your asshole. initiation basically has been flat since the late 90s and is like $50K for plenty of nice clubs with annual dues under $10K. there are plenty of non-bushwood type clubs too where it's like a $4K a year for a full family, including pool, tennis, and gym and initiation is waived or minimal if you're under 40. during ITE they were practically willing to pay ppl to join.

there's much less of a difference between golfing at a mediocre course vs. a nice course compared to having a mediocre boat vs. a nice one.

and if you just want to golf at a very nice course it will cost you a few thousand bucks a year.
Augusta is a dumb example because no one golfs there as their primary course. it's purely a prestige thing.
