Tip #1

---------------------------------

Never buy something on your way out of the store when you are shoplifting. Many, many shoplifters get busted this way because they assume that they will throw us off their trail by buying a few items. In reality, we have already observed them take the item off the shelf, remove the packaging if necessary, and conceal it on their person. If we had not seen this, then we would not be able to stop them anyway. Nonchalantly paying for a few items just gives us time to review more footage if necessary and set up for an apprehension.

Once you have concealed your item in your clothing or bag from the comfort of your favorite camera blind spot, leave the store immediately and DO NOT stop for anyone.

walking out with nothing is more suspicious no?

seems like there would be far too much work to do in order to even spot shoplifting on tape, suppose a store is open 12 hours + has 10 cameras + has hundreds of people in and out that's just impossible

and then after you magically pick out the suspects out of thousands of hours of tape, you have to somehow keep / manage records of suspected shoplifters over long times + have a working memory of faces

I'm sure the videos get deleted after a week or something

While it may be more "suspicious", your goal is to get in and get out as quickly as possible so that in the event that you were spotted taking the item they will not have time to coordinate an apprehension. Whether or not it was suspicious doesn't matter if you are out of the store and far away. You made it in that case, good job.

Store video isn't reviewed like that unless there is a pattern of shoplifting. What I am referring to is getting spotted via an actively monitored camera. When I say that there is more time to review footage while you are waiting in line, I am talking about the grey area where LP believes that you are shoplifting but are unable to 100% confirm without reviewing the tape. They need this confirmation to make the apprehension.

Tip #2

---------------------------------

On the topic of blind spots, bathrooms and dressing rooms are the best, with a slight edge going to bathrooms. Bathrooms are great because they give you almost total privacy, letting you take your time to carefully remove any packaging (making the item easier to conceal on your person) and search for security tags. Dressing rooms are ok for concealment provided they are understaffed or not monitored by a store associate, but you of course won't have a way to get rid of packaging like you can in a bathroom.

However, the big caveat here is that if you are suspected of shoplifting, loss prevention WILL follow you into the restroom and search the stall after you leave for any packaging. This is one exception to the visual rule for apprehensions. If you leave behind packaging and LP finds it, they can and will stop you.

You need to flush any packaging. If the packaging can't be flushed, you will need to steal it using a different method or not steal it at all.

One final thing, it isn't shoplifting until you go past the LAST possible point of sale (POS) without paying. This is the reason why walmart puts their bathrooms at the front of the store past the registers. Obviously don't try this at walmart for that reason.

It's a combination of things. Probably the reason Target LP is so effective is because the company simply invests heavily in high-quality camera systems (including dome cameras, decoy cameras, concealed cameras to watch store hot spots or to catch employee theft, etc.). The number of cameras per square foot is also higher (by a factor of 2 or 3) than other big box stores. Target also has a very aggressive, hands-on policy that 1) allows LP to do their job effectively and 2) attracts LP workers who are naturally inclined to give a lot of effort to the job. Finally, Target stores share information with one another regarding shoplifters and are known to allow shoplifters to "get away with it" long enough to build cases against them into felony amounts.

Altogether, the culture promotes effective LP, the technology is top-of-the-line, and Target LP is sneaky and always wants to go for the KILL SHOT.

It is possible that they saw you but let you walk. However, if you follow good OpSec and use a good blind spot then you are OK in 99% of cases. In general, most shoplifters get away with it many times before they get caught even at Target.

The masks don't have much effect because the cameras are mostly used for active monitoring. It's less common to be looking for a repeat shoplifter where recognizing facial features would matter.

Knew a guy in college who would shoplift every textbook he needed at the beginning of the year. The books had those little square things stuck between the pages that would set off the sensors, so he would just take the square thing out, stick the book in his bag, and walk out the door. Saved thousands of dollars over the four years.

I have a degree in Pyschology from a TTT, so I am pretty happy with where I am at right now (enjoying the work enough, mid 20s guy in LCOL area) and there is a definite career path. You can move into managing LP for a store or managing LP at a district/regional level and clear good money (70k on the low end). I may reevaluate in a year or two, but I think there is enough upside to keep me interested for now.

What's your involvement with law enforcement and the court system, if any?

I had a friend contact me because a friend of a friend took less than $20 of stuff from a higher end grocery store. Someone followed them outside, got a plate, and the police went to their home, with the LP person in tow for ID. Someone from the store was their for the initial court hearing.

Is this kind of approach widespread, or is this just a particular store going balls deep on deterrence?

Who followed them outside? Was it a store employee or a customer?

This is actually pretty typical, but this store sounds over the top because a $20 would almost never be pursued like this at any major chain retailer. LP will interact with LEOs to give statements and appear in court if necessary.

If someone is getting seriously into shoplifting, they should definitely consider getting some fake plates for the car.

If the first, just keep going and don't look back. If the second, just leave it alone and exit the store immediately (and dump anything you had concealed before you walk past the registers).

Tip #3

---------------------------------

While you may see a lot of people talking about buying S3 keys off the internet or making their own shoplifting deterrence removal devices (neodymium magnets are popular for this), the risk is not worth it IMO. In the event that you are caught with these in your possession, you will get enhanced charges for having burglary tools. In my opinion, it is not worth the hassle to steal anything with protection devices. You are better off sticking with smaller, less valuable items or checking out different stores until you find one with unprotected medium to high-end merchandise.

Lol no they aren't. That would be like having racks of cash or gold out in the open.

The CR move is to shoplift a number of unactivated cards a few weeks before Christmas, then carefully open the packaging and write down the numbers on the card. Carefully re-seal the packaging and secretly return the gift cards to the shelf. Over the next few days and weeks, monitor the card numbers until they're activated. Once activated, spend the funds as quickly as possible so that the recipient doesn't spend them first.

Unfortunately you can only spend the gift card balance online, which leaves a paper trail. A better solution is to invest in a magnetic stripe writer so that you can create physical copies of the gift card which you can then spend in person.

Silly idea. First, it’d be hard to replace the torn packaging. Second, most cards have a code beneath a scratch off area like a lottery ticket that you need to use the card. You can’t replace the part you scratched off.

Maybe in CA. But also, like I said, most shoplifters get away most of the time. Cart push outs like that are also very effective if you have the temperament to do it confidently.

above you were saying that stashing the items you are truly targeting, but then legitimately buying a few things to create some verisimilitude of being an honest shopper was generally ineffective.

obviously I get that someone doing a full on cart push out is going through the aisles carting their items rather than pocketing them, which is what you said got the other bros in trouble, but can you expound some more on the strategies and icy temperament that allows some people to just walk with a whole cart full of shit?

There isn't really much strategy. They just fill the cart up like normal but instead of going to the registers they push straight for the door. If they have done everything confidently, no suspicion has been aroused so the store workers will be caught off guard. In the best case scenario they won't even be noticed until they are long gone. The main issue with this strategy is that, even if they make it out the door, they have a heavy cart to unload into a vehicle which gives time to apprehend (if the store's policy allows) or to at least get a tag number. If the store gets a tag number the shoplifter will get picked up on a felony warrant in the next few days almost always.

acting suspicious and looking around a lot is the main giveaway. you are probably doing everything very calmly and confidently and it doesn't really attract much attention. it's also possible that you were being observed either by floor LP or through CCTV.

what about bringing multiples of an item to self checkout and only scanning some of them? possible to get caught this way? how closely are you watching self checkout shenanigans?

for example, one time at HD self checkout I took two nice paintbrushes out of my cart, held them in my left hand, scanned them with the gun, and then in one smooth motion put both into my bag. an overheard camera would have had trouble making out anything unusual.

in the early days of self checkout I used to get a lot of that "unexpected item in the bagging area" even when being honest at grocery stores like Giant, but haven't heard that lately/maybe HD doesn't weigh items at self checkout

that's the easiest

1. borrow friend's id. or use a fake id from black market.

2. ask for a test drive. give fake id.

3. drive to friend's garage

4. dismantle car in garage
