Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised China for having "smart, hardworking people" during a podcast interview published on Friday while criticizing some Americans, specifically in places like the Bay Area, Los Angeles and New York, for being "entitled" and "complacent."

When asked about his thoughts on whether China is an EV strategy leader in the world, Musk told Automotive News' "Daily Drive" podcast, "China rocks, in my opinion."

"The energy in China is great," Musk said. "People there – there's like a lot of smart, hardworking people. And they're really -- they're not entitled, they're not complacent, whereas I see in the United States increasingly much more complacency and entitlement especially in places like the Bay Area, and L.A. and New York."

In fact, the Los Angeles Times put the total amount of government help for Tesla at more than $4.9 billion.

Musk went on to use a sports analogy to predict rough times ahead for the U.S.

“When you’ve been winning for too long you sort of take things for granted. The United States, and especially like California and New York, you’ve been winning for too long,” he said. “When you’ve been winning too long you take things for granted. So, just like some pro sports team they win a championship you know a bunch of times in a row, they get complacent and they start losing.”

Tesla shareholders surely have been winning lately. The stock, despite a speed bump on Friday, is up more than 250% so far this year while the S&P SPX, 0.84% is stuck around breakeven.

Musk also shared his thoughts on the share price rocket ride, saying its not worth his efforts to “massage” the stock market or manage investor expectations.

“At the end of the day, if you make great cars and the company’s healthy and making great products investors will be happy,” he told Automotive News. “If you make lousy products your customers will be unhappy and then your investors will be unhappy.”

China had helped Elon Musk last year to get around $1.5 billion in loans for Tesla's Shanghai factory. The local government had also supported the company to return to normalcy in operations after manufacturing was temporarily shut due to Covid pandemic.

He also probably means it. He was able to build the plant and start production in half the time it would take in the US. LA/SF/NYC leadership actively make things harder to accomplish anything. Look at Amazon's experience in NY or all the BS Musk has had to put up with the State of California.

Musk presided over a ceremony on Tuesday at a new multi-billion-dollar plant near Shanghai — its first outside the U.S.

The Chinese plant, which was completed in record time as it sped through approvals and construction, represents a cornerstone of Musk’s plans to make Tesla a truly global carmaker.

The China plant is already assembling more than 1,000 cars a week, and aims to double that rate over the next year, Song Gang, the manufacturing director at the facility, said on Dec. 30. The company has said it plans to ramp up production to 150,000 Model 3 vehicles a year, of about 3,000 a week, when the first phase of the factory is completed and the company plans to boost production capacity to 500,000 a year after the following phase, although it isn’t clear when exactly Tesla expects to achieve those goals.

Musk’s charm offensive in China has appeared to pay off. Originally just a muddy plot about a 90-minute drive away from Shanghai’s city center, the China plant has quickly come online since it broke ground at the start of 2019. It took twice as long for Tesla’s Gigafactory near Reno, Nevada to begin churning out batteries.

Back in China, Tesla has been winning various concessions from local authorities ranging from approvals to preferential loans — all the more notable given the trade war with the U.S.
