If on a good day (1%) in the market, your unrealized portfolio return Is equal to or greater than 75x your daily wages, you can retire.

Is this a good rule of thumb?

would you retire or get another low stress job that also pays less? if the latter, you probably have enough.

I only had unrealized market gains 16x my daily wage today, so I am nowhere near retirement.

I don’t understand this comment.

Also, that’s only about 8.7 knots.

You're using weird made-up units that can be converted into normal units.

Depends a lot on your expenses, but you should probably retire well before that. Assuming 260 or so working days a year, that would mean your salary is 3.5% of your portfolio. 3.5% is already a safe withdrawal rate, so unless your expenses are 100% of your salary, that's overly cautious - if your expenses are half of your salary, that's a 1.75% withdrawal rate, definitely overkill.

How did you come to these numbers?

You would have 3-4 top 1% days a year, which would only generate 225-300 days of wages. You would also expect to hit 3-4 bottom 1% days during the same time frame, which would wipe out a lot more than your top 1% made.
