July
https://www.guns.com/news/2020/08/03/nics-gun-check-figures-highest-july-in-history
The month of July 2020 was the highest July in terms of federal background checks for gun transfers since the system was established over 20 years ago.
The unadjusted figures of 3,614,192 checks conducted through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System last month is an 80.3 percent jump from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,004,277 in July 2019.
However, when the data was filtered by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to remove figures for gun permit checks by states which use NICS for that purpose, the number of checks stands at 1,848,307 which is an increase of 122.5 percent compared to the July 2019 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 830,579.
These are historic figures for firearm sales that have outpaced last year’s figures each month and have set monthly records since March," Mark Oliva, NSSF’s director of public affairs told Guns.com. "July’s background checks for the sale of a firearm were more than one million higher than the same period last year."
Oliva pointed to the continued cornucopia of COVID-19 restrictions, civil unrest, and calls to defund law enforcement as factors that have driven demand.
"This period of sustained firearm purchases clearly shows that Americans continue to take responsibility for their personal safety, especially during times of uncertainty," said Oliva. "Additionally, talk by political figures in a presidential election cycle of instituting strict gun control, banning entire classes of firearms, and severely restricting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans are being seen."

June
https://www.npr.org/sections/live-updates-protests-for-racial-justice/2020/07/02/886545589/amid-virus-fears-and-protests-firearm-background-checks-hit-all-time-high
In a year marked by coronavirus fears, a slowing economy and nationwide protests calling for an end to systemic racism, more and more Americans are looking to arm themselves, according to a key government indicator.
The FBI reported that Americans set a new record of 3.9 million background checks to purchase or possess firearms in June. That eclipsed the previous record set in March of 3.7 million background checks.
In fact, seven of 1o highest weeks for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which is run by the FBI and was launched in 1998, have come this year. This includes the first four weeks in June.
Illinois registered the highest number of background checks last month, with 706,404. That state was followed by Kentucky (395,188), Texas (227,232), and Florida (210,415). California rounded out the top five background checks with 158,349.
By comparison, Washington, D.C., had 897 for the month of June, while Hawaii tallied 1,660 background checks and Vermont had 4,920, according to the FBI data.
"Civil unrest, rioting, looting and calls to defund police are unquestionably motivating factors of why this trend is increasing," said Mark Oliva of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearm industry trade association.
"Americans are right to be concerned for their personal safety. It's entirely reasonable that law-abiding citizens are exercising their Constitutional right to purchase a firearm to protect themselves," he said in a written statement to NPR.

NSSF's own figures, which it says are adjusted to reflect the background checks "that are coded for the sale of a firearm" show that June 2020 represented a 135.7% increase compared to June 2019.
Oliva expects that this year will see the highest number of background checks ever recorded.

May
https://www.guns.com/news/2020/06/02/nics-gun-check-figures-highest-on-record-for-any-may-in-history
The month of May 2020 was the highest May in terms of federal background checks for gun transfers since the system was established over two decades ago.
The unadjusted figures of 3,066,740 checks conducted through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System last month is a 32.1% jump from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,320,918 in May 2019.
While that increase alone is staggering in scale, when the data was filtered by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to remove figures for gun permit checks by states which use NICS for that purpose, the number of checks stands at 1,595,790 which is an increase of 75.2% compared to the May 2019 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 910,910.

March
https://www.guns.com/news/2020/04/06/march-sees-highest-number-of-daily-weekly-nics-checks-in-history
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System recently logged its highest volume day and week in history.
The system, used to clear firearms transfers by FFLs since November 1998 as a result of the 1993 Brady Bill, peaked on March 20 with a tally of 210,308 checks performed. This number passed the two previous records set for Black Friday 2017 (203,086 checks) and Black Friday 2019 (202,465 checks). Further, the new fourth and fifth place highest NICS days are March 21, 2020 (185,751) and March 19, 2020 (185,742)– both within the same week as the current first-place day. The same week saw March 17 and March 18 garner the bottom two spots in the NICS “top 10 days” list.
With five of the top 10 days in NICS traffic history, the week of March 16-22 currently stands at the top of the platform’s “highest week” list with 1,197,788 checks performed in a seven-day period. This is a quarter-million more than the now-second-place week, recorded at the end of 2012 during the post-Sandy Hook gun rush, an all-time record that held for the past eight years.
