Sarasota is *old* as fuck; all of FL is to some degree, but that whole stretch south of tampa along the gulf coast is the worst about it (naples, fort myers, venice, etc.). The beaches are nice but I'd take the panhandle over them. Florida is notoriously tacky and has what I think is probably the worst culture of any state in the union; I attribute this to the lack of elite, rooted families, since no one is really "from" florida -- there were under 1 million people in the state up through 1940, almost all of whom were from the I-10 jacksonville-pensacola corridor (tallahassee is the capital b/c it was halfway between these two places), since it's basically unlivable without A/C. The culture is surprisingly conservative; the panhandle is actually among the most redneck regions of the county, and places like tampa and most of the southern gulf coast aren't truly 'southern', but they retain some of the characteristics of southern people -- mostly the bad or, at best, not-that-great characteristics. These things all make most of the miscellaneous florida towns (notably Tampa) deceptively bad places for meeting a wife, dating, or really even hooking up. I mean, you can do it, but it's no easier to bang chicks there than it is in like huntsville or birmingham. Nightlife is dead.

Denver was a really fantastic place to be in the early 00s during its up-and-coming period. Today most of the town might as well be fucking flatbush; umc yuppie trash abounds. Honestly if you're used to NYC or similar (and for these purposes, Chi/LA/DC are "similar") and are just looking for 'step down' at most in terms of culture, you'll love it. It's a built-up downtown that's easily walkable and driveable; even nashville has shittier traffic. There is an outdoorsy-exercise culture that's annoying, put-on, and heavily GC-ified, but there are worse things. Expect every trail you hike on to be packed; people who work in boulder (increasingly common; even more UMC) really do hike the flatirons at lunch everyday, which sounds really cool until you go do it and realize that you're about as Alone out there as you were riding the escalator back in nyc. It would be fairly easy to find a respectable UMC wife or date recreationally; I dunno about the tinder scene... or the nightlife, tbh. Be aware that none of the primo ski destinations are anywhere near denver (a lot of the serious skiers drive to taos, not flame), and even vail can be a 3.5-hour drive during the season.

The Gulf, especially as south as Sarasota, is getting pollution pwned. The gulf is like 4 feet deep, gets warm as balls, and basically turns into a swamp. Blue green algae, toxic sludge. The entire Florida sugar industry pumps its fertilizer into waterways that lead to the gulf and now, shocker, youve got algae blooms as big as the city of houston just floating around the coast.

Expect many days when swimming is outright prohibited and many weeks when its legally permissible but you wouldnt want to.

Dead fish, dead dolphins, etc.
