I don't get this argument. The smaller states explicitly wanted a structural bias in their favor because they didn't want their priorities overridden by larger states.

The fact that big states are *even bigger* makes this structural bias even more necessary.

I think the current federal government looks nothing like the framers imagined. Presidents go to war whenever they want and control a gigantic administrative state that makes and enforces the law. the latter (and maybe neocons would say the former too) seem like ways to get around an antiquated system that moves too slowly for 2020

But obviously Dems don't want this. This is explicitly about being able to force states to do things that their elected governments don't want to do.

A great example of this is the assault rifle ban. Every state that wants a ban has one already. Dems want to force Wyoming, and Alaska, and Mississippi, and Texas to ban assault rifles to, despite it being a total non starter at the state level.

The reality is that one side has gotten the minority rights they care about -- protections for racial minorities, women, Muslims/Jews, gays, trannies -- accepted as legal and social consensus, and want to destroy the concept of protection against mob rule now that they are the mob.

They want to go about banning firearms, criminalizing hate speech, enshrining racial quotas as law, force evangelicals to adhere to anti-discrimination laws, discard border security as a concept, etc.
