But I don’t think your logic holds, and I think it’s on a different point than the quote. I don’t think there’s any reason to expect that Drumpf would get more crossover votes than the big guy would. For example, there’s no analog to the Lincoln Project or Republicans for Biden on the lib side.

so if there are 3 areas A1, A2, A3 with republican straight-ticket (compared to dem straight ticket) of 70%, 50% and 30%, you'd expect e.g. 10% of republicans in each areas to break for biden. what they're finding is in the 70% repub areas, 30% of repubs are breaking for biden, in the 50% areas, 20% and in the 30%, 10%.

If republicans were breaking for biden, you'd expect say 10% of repubs to break biden in each precinct

P1: 60/40 straight ticket repub -> 50/50 unaffiliated trump vote

P2: 40/60 straight ticket repub -> 30/70 unaffiliated trump vote

P3: 20/80 straight ticket repub -> 10/80 unaffiliated trump vote

But we're seeing that as you get into more republican areas, the PERCENT of republicans breaking for biden increases:

P1: 60/40 straight ticket repub -> 40/60 unaffiliated trump vote (20% change in pro-trump area)

P2: 40/60 straight ticket repub -> 30/70 unaffiliated trump vote (10% change in mixed area)

P3: 20/80 straight ticket repub -> 15/85 unaffiliated trump vote (5% change in pro-biden area)

And what you're seeing is the % change compared to the % republican is LINEAR. that kind of relationship is an anomaly explainable POSSIBLY by algorithmic intervention

Honest Question: Does it not make sense that as a Precinct votes Repub down ballot more, it makes it more likely that a negative Trump gap would emerge?

Like imagine a precinct that voted 100% Repub downballot. It would be impossible for Trump to ever outperform (he could only get 100% himself or less than that).

First they look at the % of pure party line voting and plot that running from left to right. Then they look at how Trump did along that spectrum. Turns out that Trump had unexpected support among Dems, so those areas he's above the line.

So let's look at the trend as we move toward what are increasingly Republican-dominated precincts.

We'd expect to see no significant defections from Trump given the strength of his popularity among Republicans and his unexpected support among Democrats.

But if for some reason some Republicans had grown tired of Trump in an organic way, you'd see the Trump dots below the line but in a flat pattern running from left to right.

That is, there's no reason to believe that in a precinct with 40% partyline GOP voting you'd see (1) a higher rate of defections from Trump than in a 30% partyline GOP precinct, and (2) a lower rate of defections from Trump than in a 50% partyline GOP district. You'd see the same rate of defections. You'd see a flat line.

Moreover, as you moved to the most pro-Republican precincts of all, you'd never expect to see Trump support among Republicans plummet.
