If this election has proved anything it's that the popular vote is meaningless in presidential elections.

Dems won the house popular vote by 8 points in 2018, they're on track to win it by about 2.5% this year.

there are millions, if not tens of millions, of untapped votes.

Look at Texas, a large state that routinely had abysmal turnout rates because it's never been seriously contested. The first race both parties did earnest GOTV efforts and turnout exploded for both parties.

Who knows how many millions of votes are the GOP losing out on in CA and NY and IL? We don't know because it hasn't been logical for them to try and find out.

Sure, but no one knows the breakdown, which is the point. The primary system in CA shuts out the GOP from most of the statewide races. I could easily see the GOP trimming the margins down there if they actually tried.

I think lower propensity voters tend to vote dem, even in deep blue states. That's why even in NY, the state GOP has long been opposed to making voting and voting registration easier. I don't buy that higher voter turnout in Cali and NY would give the GOP pres candidate a popular vote advantage. I think an increase in participation there would have the same effect it had everywhere else in this election (a slight dem advantage).

Donald Trump would have absolutely manhandled Biden without a freak Chinese virus. Even with that and Trump actively sabotaging himself, the Democrats still lost seats in the house and failed to win back the senate

This take seems mystifying to me. If the economy reverts to the lethargic wage/job growth we had under Obama, people will have zero patience for the dottering mummy that no one ever liked

Doubtful. Biden was the perfect “old moderate white guy” to face off against Trump. He gave disgruntled white male voters cover to vote Dem, and this is what the voting analysis in fact shows. Combined with the “Lincoln Project” and other never Trump lobbying efforts, Biden was the perfect candidate for making a switch, covid or not.

Obviously polling firms have done an excellent job of accurately reflecting support for Donald Trump so good point

Also note that the George Floyd riots (which further hurt trump) were undoubtedly related to covid lockdowns

They definitely had their issues but do you think the pre-covid polling was any more or less accurate than pre-election day polling? I think the race was always within a very narrow range and very similar to the 2016 outcome. With trump, virtually everyone had made their minds up.

What are you talking about? Trump would’ve given his state of the union speech (that made Pelosi lose her shit and tear it) unabashedly at 100,000 person rallies. His share of blacks and Latinos would have been even higher had they not been impacted by covid. He would’ve been an electoral juggernaut and Biden would’ve been a sacrificial lamb

Bush won CA in 1988. Clinton didn’t win a majority in CA in 1992. Then courts overturned CA Prop 187 approved in 1994 and Republicans never had a chance of winning CA again.
